POVERTY AND DEPORTEES ON THE STREETS IN TIJUANA

In the U.S. media, even in progressive media, we pay very little attention to what happens to most people when they’re deported, or when they choose self-deportation as a result of fear. Most people who are deported or who self-deport go home to communities far south of the border. But the people who are just dumped through the border gate and have no home to go to find themselves in cities like Tijuana, Mexico. For many years deportees from the United States have lived on the street or in the concrete Tijuana River channel.

A year ago, the city’s refuges were packed with families from places as far away as Venezuela and Haiti. These days, that wave of people from countries besides Mexico has dissipated. People know that Trump has closed the border. These photographs show the cavernous halls in shelters where migrants set up their tents. Today shelter residents are often families from southern Mexico, fleeing the violence. Others are still here because they cannot go home. These photographs also show deportees mixed with other street dwellers, eating at a sidewalk meal distribution site. This is a terrible reality for many people.

El Valle de Lágrimas, Texas: Se organiza contra las redadas por ICE

El Valle está organizándose en contra de él Trompas y su grupo de bandidos, recientemente realizaron tres protestas en cuatro diferentes pueblos en Texas; Brownsville, Harlingen, Weslaco y McAllen. En total salieron más de 1500 personas en protesta el 18 de Octubre, el día de “No Reyes”.

Aunque no todos protestaron en la calle, las personas apoyaron las protestas en diferentes maneras porque basado en lo que se mira en la noticias respecto de cómo el ICE está levantando a personas indocumentadas, residentes permanentes y hasta ciudadanos, muchas personas temen ser víctimas del ICE.

The Valley is organizing against Trump and his gang of thugs. They recently held three protests in four different towns throughout Texas: Brownsville, Harlingen, Weslaco, and McAllen. In total, more than 1,500 people took to the streets on October 18, 2025, the day of the “No Kings” protests.

Although not everyone protested in the streets, people supported the protests in various ways. Many people fear becoming victims of ICE based on what they see in the news about how ICE is detaining undocumented immigrants, permanent residents, and even citizens.

Here in the Valley, raids have been carried out and people have disappeared for weeks because ICE is holding them without the right to communicate with their families.

Day of the Dead Vigils Pay Tribute to Those Who have Died in ICE Custody

On October 29th, Detention Resistance, Free Them All SD, the American Friends Service Committee, and Friends of International Friendship held a vigil outside the Otay Detention Center. These groups promoted it through flyers, social media, and a press release, inviting community members to bring items for the altar and to participate in its collaborative creation. Since 2020, they have come together to honor those who have lost their lives at Otay Detention Center. For Friends of International Friendship Park, this marks their second year of participation and support in this remembrance effort.

In recent years, these organizations have united to build altars and hold vigils specifically for those who have died at Otay Detention Center, a tragic outcome of the inhumane neglect by the private company CoreCivic and the INHUMANE IMMIGRATION SYSTEM. Since the start of this year, the current administration has seen the total number of deaths in detention centers rise to 23 across the United States.

Mexican folk medicine is being reclaimed during a time of deep uncertainty in the U.S. political climate.

Imanol Miranda can still recall fleeting memories of curanderismo, or Mexican folk medicine, from his childhood in Mexico City. He remembers the smell of burning copal, seeing a ritual dance in El Zócalo and the overflowing displays of healing herbs in the city’s open markets. A move to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, in his middle school years, pulled Miranda away before he could form a deeper understanding of curanderismo.

Save the Tijuana River Valley Community Garden!

Editor’s Note: Part of the Tribuno del Pueblo’s mission is to protect Mother Earth. Therefore, we focus on informing and working together to find solutions to address injustices affecting our planet within our community.

After two weeks marked by stress, sadness, and advocacy from both internal and external community members, as well as numerous voices and efforts from individuals, the community garden will remain open. This was the clear message conveyed by Paloma Aguirre to many members of the South Community during the first Town Hall, hosted by Supervisor Aguirre on Tuesday, October 7th, at the San Ysidro Library.

While the garden is currently safe, the community must organize and form a management team to oversee the land. Gardeners need unity for effective management. Supervisor Aguirre will attend the October 18 meeting to discuss how SD County and the community can work together to preserve the garden.

‘Step Up and Speak Out’: Chicago Pastors Lead the Charge Against ICE Detentions

As demonstrations against an immigration detention facility in Broadview, Illinois have ramped up in recent weeks, several local priests have joined in the protests to call attention to what they say are affronts to Christian teachings.

Father Larry Dowling, pastor at the St. Agatha Catholic Church in Chicago, wrote a lengthy Facebook post on Saturday in which he described his experience in trying to gain access to the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility to offer communion services to detainees.
