Climate displacement and border enforcement–two dynamics trending distinctly upward–are on a collision course.

Believe it or not, I had a transcendent experience at this year’s Border Security Expo, the annual event that brings Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) together with private industry. I hesitate to describe it that way, though, because I was on the exhibition hall floor and instantly found myself in the very heart of the U.S. border-industrial complex.

“Chicagoans Continue to Fight for their Immigrant Neighbors”

It has been weeks since the massive “ICE out of LA” protests were all over mainstream media. Immigration protests were seen throughout the country, including small towns, with thousands marching in the streets for “No Kings” protests. While these massive protests bring awareness to the kidnappings of our immigrant neighbors, they are not the only way to fight back. In Chicago, activists have been holding daily vigils outside the immigration courthouse downtown. They inform Chicagoans that they are passing by a courthouse where immigrants are unjustly taken without warning, simply for doing the right thing and checking in with immigration. ICE continues to kidnap people off the street throughout the country and it is vital that we don’t look away.

What Birthright Citizenship Means on Juneteenth for Us Today

On Trump’s first day of office in his second administration, January 20, 2025, he signed an executive order that would deny birthright citizenship to children born in the U.S. to: undocumented immigrant parents or those with temporary status such as on a student or tourist visa.

While aimed at immigrants today, the first reference to overturning the 14th Amendment birthrights guarantee was Donald Trump’s 2011 challenge to U.S. born Barack Obama’s right to run as candidate for U.S. President since his father was a black man from Kenya, though his mother was U.S. born white. Referred to as the “birther” movement, this racist lie helped put Trump in the conservative spotlight by stoking racial tensions and promoting divisions. He has successfully manipulated and magnified these concerns in both the 2016 and 2024 Presidential elections.

President Trump’s executive order betrays rights won by the African American enslaved people.

Thousands of protestors took to the streets in Chicago to protest the kidnappings of their immigrant neighbors. ICE has been conducting raids throughout the country and the agency has been clear in making Chicago a prime target. More than 10 people were detained on June 4 after receiving a text to check in for their immigration appointments. Community members showed up to protest the detainments but ICE has continued to detain people all over the country despite intensifying protests.
