“I’m not a player. I just game a lot...”
We here at the Chicago Retro Gamer realize the total awesomeness of videogames. Let’s face it: they are unbelievably awesome. Now while almost all videogames are awesome in their own regard, we have a special fondness for those games, now called “retro” or “classic” video games, which came out during the Golden Era of Videogames. This occurred from the late 70’s throughout the early 2000’s, but really was at the height of its popularity in the 80’s and 90’s. During this era, playing timeless classics such as Super Mario Brothers, Metroid, Duck Hunt, Tetris, Super Mario Kart, and The Legend of Zelda (just to name a very small few) evoked a wondrous opportunity to be transported into exhilarating and adventurous new lands accomplishing tasks and defeating bad guys that we could have never dreamt to be so creative and satisfying. The games we grew up with as children of this time period not only were crucial parts of some of the most nostalgic times of our lives, but also were our digital support systems and trusted companions as we navigated life and forged the path towards adulthood.
“Damn, it feels good to be a gamer.”
We never forgot the awesome memories which drew out nostalgia of critical points in our life, and we continue to be transported back to those same worlds to defeat those same bad guys, because it is both ridiculously fun and fuels a source of camaraderie amongst fellow “retro gamers” throughout the world. In essence, it’s a grand feeling of belonging, but also accomplishment. I mean, can you remember the first time you found the hidden 1-up in the first Super Mario Brothers? Or taken a step further, can you remember the first time you beat the first Super Mario Brothers? To us, there’s no better feeling than living in those moments, and continuing to preserve and relive those moments with fellow passionate retro gamers throughout the world.
