The Flower Fairies are illustrations by Cicely Mary Barker, created during the first half of the 20th century.

The Celtic tree month of holly runs from July to August. As the nights start to draw in, the holly king rises. He will rule over the dark half of the year until the winter solstice. To the Celts the holly tree held the power of eternity as it is an evergreen.

The Holly Fairy - Cicely Mary Barker

O, I am green in Winter-time,
When other trees are brown;
Of all the trees (So saith the rhyme)
The holly bears the crown.
December days are drawing near
When I shall come to town,
And carol-boys go singing clear
Of all the trees (O hush and hear!)
The holly bears the crown!

For who so well-beloved and merry
As the scarlet Holly Berry?

Unable to go to school as a child because of her epilepsy, Cicely was home-schooled and spent much of her time drawing and painting. Her artwork was influenced by illustrator Kate Greenaway and even more so by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and she developed her talent as a member of the Croydon Art Society. Her flower fairy paintings, in particular, were driven by the Victorian popularity of fairies and fairy stories.

Adriaen van Ostade (1610 - 1685)

"A Peasant Family in a Cottage Interior" 1660's, oil on oak panel, 35 x 31 cm.
Adriaen van Ostade was Netherlands' leading painter of peasant and 'low-life' genre painting. His subjects included the village fair or kermis, village inn scenes, family life, domestic and agricultural work, and trades. In his early work, Van Ostade depicted scenes of peasants engaged in debauchery using Rembrandt van Rijn's forceful chiaroscuro. Later, from the mid-1650s and 1660s, he portrayed calmer, more respectable people in comfortable interiors with carefully structured spaces and picturesque clutter. Although famous throughout his career for his depictions of farmers and peasants, it was only around mid-century that Ostade created refined panels such as the present work, with its meticulous brushwork, rich coloring and sense of tranquility. By then, both he and the Netherlands had become more prosperous.

Joseph Christian Leyendecker was one of the pre-eminent American illustrators of the early twentieth century. He is best known for his poster, book, and advertising illustrations, the iconic trade character known as the Arrow Collar Man, and his numerous covers for the Saturday Evening Post. Between 1896 and 1950, Leyendecker painted more than four hundred magazine covers. During ‘The Golden Age of American Illustration’, for the Saturday Evening Post alone, J. C. Leyendecker produced 322 covers, as well as many advertisement illustrations for its interior pages. No other artist, until the arrival of Norman Rockwell two decades later, was so solidly identified with one publication.
