Proactive School Safety and the Reality of Shootings with David Riedman
Watch📺 and Listen🎧 : www.thereadinesslab.com/em-weekly-links
This week's guest is David Riedman, researcher and creator of the K-12 School Shooting Database. We discuss the surprising realities around shootings and violence at schools that often go unreported in the media. How can emergency managers help schools be more proactive with safety planning and preparedness? David shares insights from the data and patterns seen in the 300+ school shootings in the database. We also talk about the role of gun detection technology like ZeroEyes, the company David now works for, that uses AI and cameras to immediately detect firearms and provide alerts. Tune in to learn more about current school safety issues beyond the mass shooting incidents covered in the news.
Sometimes you set yourself up for failure like when you think it's the crusty guy's turn to do the fire safety presentation.

It's been a couple of weeks since our last episode and it's because of good things. The first week was because of Thanksgiving, which I hope everyone enjoyed and shoutout to all those who had to work and keep watch while so many were off. We appreciate you! The second week was because we were at our second Dynamic Populations training event in Orlando, FL. This was a challenging event to pull off, complicated by some logistical issues outside of our control, and a lesson in not giving up. John Scardena and I discuss what went well, what was new and different, and how strong the headwinds were leading up to the event. Also, we talk a lot about radios so enjoy geeking out about the newest L3Harris Technologies public safety radios and the fact we had the guy who builds them at the training. #training #emergencymanagement #emergencypreparedness #response #publicsafety #eventplanning
