AM Radio - The Back Story
Radio ruled the communications world from Marconi through the end of World War II. This period was called the ‘Golden Age’ and produced programming that informed, entertained, and scared several generations. Most of the programming developed over this period made its way to Television in the early 1950’s; AM Radio was without peer.
Given the available technology, the AM (amplitude modulation) signal was the only choice. With the advent of FM (frequency modulation) in the late 1950’s and its higher quality signal (stereo), FM claimed the majority of music broadcasting and by the end of the 1980's AM radio existed without a purpose.
Everything changed in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s with the advent of conservative talk radio. This met a need for a different source of news and commentary. By the beginning of this decade it dominated the airwaves and brought AM Radio back to profitability. Except there was a dark underside. Station owners moved away from local broadcasting with syndication and this led to a huge reduction in radio personnel. Today most AM Stations are so lean there is nobody really working creating a situation where profit was only possible through more cost cutting. Just like the 1980”s AM Radio needs a new business model. Enter the team at WNTW.
