Cherokee Worldview: Panelist Spotlight ✨

“Our People, Our Stories, Our Home” is a discussion panel with community guest speakers and will explore Cherokee history, culture, and connections to land through an oral tradition that our people have perpetuated for time immemorial: storytelling. This is an event for the Cherokee community.

“Levi West is the current Cherokee Youth Council Leadership Specialist at the Ray Kinsland Leadership Institute. He lives in the Wolftown community with his wife and children.

Levi holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from Arizona State University and will graduate with a master's degree in sustainability leadership this December.

His current passion and research are in the history and recorded teachings of all things Cherokee with a focus on the Qualla Boundary.”

Cherokee Worldview: Panelist Spotlight ✨

“Our People, Our Stories, Our Home” is a discussion panel with community guest speakers and will explore Cherokee history, culture, and connections to land through an oral tradition that our people have perpetuated for time immemorial: storytelling. This is an event for the Cherokee community.

“Kathi Littlejohn, an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, lives in the Wolftown Community with her family in Cherokee, North Carolina. She has been telling Cherokee stories for more than 40 years at events, festivals, and schools.

She has produced four CD’s of Cherokee stories “Cherokee Legends Volume I, II, and III and Cherokee stories of the Supernatural” which can be downloaded from your favorite streaming service. She also completed a series of YouTube videos named “Cherokee History and Stories, “What Happened Here”?

She hosts monthly storytelling groups at the Snowbird library in Graham County and on the Qualla Boundary at the Ray Kinsland Leadership Institute building with other local storytellers that is free and open to anyone wanting to learn about Cherokee Storytelling.”

The next panel discussion in the Cherokee Worldview series is titled "Teachings from Our Stories” and will explore our peoples knowledge of our history, culture, and land through the stories passed down by our ancestors.

Current panelists include Kathi Littlejohn, Matthew Tooni, and Levi West.

Kyndra ᏔᎳ PostOak is a 15 year old high school student at Shining Rock Academy and was honored with the title of Teen Miss Cherokee in October 2023. Her parents are Amy and Johnny PostOak and she and her family reside in the Wolftown Community. Kyndra is an active member of junior NAIWA and the Cherokee Youth Council. She is also a passionate advocate for youth mental health and well-being. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the violin. Once she graduates high school she plans to continue her formal education and return to her home community of the Qualla Boundary to use her knowledge and skills to have a positive impact on our Tribe.

Brenda Toineeta Pipestem serves as an Associate Justice for the EBCI Supreme Court. Joyce Conseen Dugan was the first and only female elected to the office of Principal Chief of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation, serving from 1995 to 1999. Prior to her tenure as Chief, she had a distinguished career in education, beginning as a teacher assistant and teacher before rising to the position of Superintendent in the Cherokee School system. She earned both a BS in Education and an MS in Education from Western Carolina University.

As Principal Chief, she prioritized cultural preservation and protection, establishing the first Cultural Division to administer related policies. Early in her term, she initiated the purchase of Kituwah, the Mothertown of the Cherokee Nation, a feat she considers her greatest legacy.

Ms. Dugan has served on numerous tribal and regional committees and boards focused on preserving, promoting, and protecting environmental, health, and education issues. These include the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area (Founding Member), the NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Mainspring (formerly Land Trust for the Little Tennessee), the Western Carolina University Board of Governors, and the Cherokee Indian Hospital Governing Board.

Her awards include an Honorary Degree from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for her efforts in cultural preservation, the Distinguished Alumni Award from Western Carolina University, and recognition on the Honor Roll of Peak Performers from the College of Education and Allied Professions at Western Carolina University.

This event is geared towards the Cherokee community and will explore the importance of Cherokee/Kituwah women in leadership culturally, historically, and in our contemporary society. The amazing women speaking on this panel include former Principal Chief Joyce Dugan, EBCI Supreme Court Justice Brenda Toineeta Pipestem, Ray Kinsland Leadership Institute Department Manager Tonya Carroll, and Teen Miss Cherokee Kyndra ᏔᎳ PostOak.
