Del. Les Adams talks about a bill he introduced to the General Assembly this year that addresses tick borne diseases. Adams joined Del. Danny Marshall, Sen. Frank Ruff and Matthew Hall from the Attorney General's office for a legislative breakfast, hosted by the Danville Pittsylvania Chamber of Commerce and held at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research.
Family, friends and church leaders gathered today to celebrate the life of Danville Civil Rights leader Lawrence G. Campbell at Bible Way Cathedral. Described as an “angel sent from God,” Campbell leaves a lasting legacy in his hometown and beyond. Church bishops from as far as Maryland and New York came to pay their respects to a man who not only helped lead the fight for equality in Danville, but also founded Bible Way Church, which has provided the city with a new generation of leaders. Chatham High School Concert Band director Logan Epperly leads a performance of Darklands March today during the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association District VI concert band assessment at GW High School in Danville. Chatham also performed A Little Tango Music and Peregrin.
The Gretna High School Concert Band, under the direction of Allison Shelton, performed this afternoon at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association District VI concert band assessment at GW High School in Danville. Gretna performed Union March, Celtic Air and Dance and Scorpion!
The Tunstall High School combined band performed today at the annual District VI concert band assessment held at George Washington High School in Danville. Pittsylvania County and Danville schools are participating in the three-day event, which winds up on Saturday. To perform Saturday is Westover Christian Academy, Gretna High School and Chatham High School beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The Edmunds brothers talked about their careers tonight at the 1 Dream One Team Gala held at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. Tremaine Edmunds talked about the past year playing for the Buffalo Bills, along with brothers Trey and Terrell. The evening featured Coach Bud Foster as guest speaker, as well as this year’s high school scholarship recipients. Sonya Ravindranath Waddell, vice president and economist for regional and community analysis with the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond spoke at the Danville Pittsylvania Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting this morning at the Institute of Advanced Learning and Research. Waddell spoke on characteristics and challenges facing rural communities in Virginia.
Blairs VFD volunteers work with Laurel Park Towing and Recovery to recover a truck that had gone off the southbound side of Business 29 in Blairs this morning. Two occupants of the vehicle were injured and transported to an area hospital. A passenger train was stopped after the crash, but resumed once the vehicle was found not to be on the tracks. More information to follow as it becomes available.
The parade culminated with a performace by the North Carolina A&T State University marching band, sponsored by Caesars Virginia.
The Riverview Rotary Club treated residents to an exuberant and joyful Christmas parade this evening along Main Street with holiday music by the GW High School marching band (in the video) as well as Tunstall, Chatham and Dan River high schools.
The Kuumba Dance Company provided some lively entertainment this evening before the Christmas tree was lit down at the Main Street plaza in downtown Danville. Also performing carols was Park Avenue Elementary School.
Jus' Cause performed tonight at the Olde Dominion Blue Grass Festival in Chatham. Also performing were the New North Carolina Ramblers, High Fidelity, Shelton & Williams and Rhonda Vincent.
The Anointed Steppers with Evening Light Cathedral performed during intermission Friday at the Danville Police Youth Engagement talent contest. There were 23 performances with prizes awarded. See an upcoming Star-Tribune for more details.
The Danville Police offered the media an opportunity to try out its MILO Range Training simulator. The simulator allows officers to encounter a variety of situations — from deadly to benign — to enhance decision-making capabilities out in the field. In this video, Sgt. The Pittsylvania County Historical Society honored Del. Les Adams for a resolution that he introduced, and was passed unanimously by the General Assembly, designating October as Local History Month. Adams described the process this morning at the 1813 Clerk's Office in Chatham.
Marching bands from Pittsylvania County's four high schools — Chatham, Dan River, Gretna and Tunstall — joined together Saturday to perform the National Anthem. The employees of Aerofarms were celebrated this afternoon as the company held a ribbon-cutting for its one-of-a-kind facility located in Danville-Pittsylvania County. The facility grows greens that will be available at local grocers such as Walmart.
