At this point everyone has had a pandemic missed-event to look back on, a momentous occasion in their life that occurred in a different way from how it was supposed to; maybe it was a graduation, a wedding, a new baby, a grand opening of a long-planned business venture or maybe a new job.
“My first job! What a first year!” said Abby Po***ck with a laugh. Po***ck became the new music teacher in the Provincetown school system last year. “I can’t wait to be in my own classroom,” said this music instructor. “And I miss being able to perform live and I really miss the Cape Symphony Jazz in the Schools program live presentations.”
Along with her school job and those past live performances, Po***ck gives private music lessons and has for years. “That’s been challenging during the pandemic, but we make it work. Virtual lessons work just fine.”
Po***ck said she will take on anyone who wants to learn to play the saxophone. “Anyone at any level,” she said. “It’s fine if you have zero experience. There’s promise in anybody. I enjoy starting with someone at that beginning level and watching it unfold! I can teach any age too; a child to someone in their nineties!”
“I had studied music on other instruments with a variety of teachers years ago, and at 57 years old, I had my first saxophone lesson ever with Abby! She does not waste a minute of time while keeping lessons relaxed and super fun,” said one happy student.
Po***ck can teach on all types of saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone) and even other instruments like the clarinet or trombone. She studied at the Hartt School, which is a comprehensive performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Ct., where she immersed herself in classical saxophone studies. And she is earning certification to teach band, jazz band, choir and general music for grades K- 12.
Music is in her soul. “Music teaches someone so much,” she said. She fell in love with it as a child in Brewster’s Eddy Elementary when she played in the school band, “I started and never stopped,” she laughed.
She invites you to try her lessons on for size. “Your first lesson is free. I have some openings right now in the after-school hours and other times during the summer. As soon as the pandemic restrictions are eased, I’ll return to my usual methods of going to your home to do the lessons.” She told me she can arrange instrument rentals too. There’s really nothing stopping you from taking the chance. Give Abby Po***ck a call today!

Open 7 days at 8 a.m. (earlier in season) to 5 p.m.

Friendships happen in many ways and some happen in a bar or restaurant. “We met at the Scargo Café,” said Chris Iovanna, co-owner of Harwich Port’s newest bait and tackle shop, HarwichSport Bait & Tackle. “Paul and his wife were sitting at the bar with a seat on either side of them when my wife and I walked in,” explained Iovanna. “We asked them to move over one seat, so we could sit down. And they did! So I joked ‘you must not be from Connecticut,’ and Paul laughed and said ‘as a matter of fact I am!’ We’ve been friends ever since.” And now they’re business partners, as of March 5 the two own and run HarwichSport Bait & Tackle.
“It’s been ‘reely’ great,” laughed Soucy. The takeover of Sunrise Bait & Tackle was a smooth one. “Because of Covid-19 we started fishing together,” said Iovanna. “And Paul, who had retired from teaching, started working for Joann Armstrong who owned Sunrise.” So when Armstrong expressed a desire to sell her business, the two just looked at each other, and said ‘let’s do it!’
“Joann has been a big help for us,” said Iovanna. “And is still available whenever we need her. She came to our grand opening.” The two said Sheryl Proctor owner of Drew’s Sport Shop in Chatham, has also been a consultant and attended their grand opening.
The shop carries all the gear you need for fresh or salt water fishing, along with fresh bait. They are fully stocked with rods, reels and combos, and carry these signature reels; Penn, Daiwa, Shimaio and Shakespeare. “We have everything Sunrise carried and more!” said Sousy. They offer reel cleaning and lubricating and respooling with over 40 varieties of line. In fact Iovanna was cleaning a reel while I spoke with him; the cleaning was very thorough and was impressive to watch. “If we respool your rod and reel, we’ll clean your reel for just five dollars more.”
“So far things are going great. We’ve made some sales and lots of new friends,” said Sousy. They said customers have been drawn to the Ugly Stik line, and the wide variety in general of rods, reels, lures, spinners and the like. “The Penn reel is a great off-the-rack reel,” said Iovanna. There must be over a hundred reels in here! There’s always a Clearance Corner too. “We’re constantly adding items to new one-of-a-kind items here and throughout the store. So come in often to check these out.” They carry clamming and crabbing equipment and hope to expand into fly fishing supplies soon. “Fly fishing is on our road map,” said Iovanna. “Check us out on Facebook and Instagram for updates on our hours. We expect to be open more once the season begins.”
The two live in Harwich and are thrilled when locals stop by with advice or to chat. “We are breathing new life into a nice business here,” said Iovanna.
“We want to be here for our neighbors,” added Sousy. Stop in and say hello today!

Heidi Fougere’s mobile hair studio has everything a stationary salon has! “I’ve been thinking about doing this, having a mobile hair studio for along time,” said Fougere. “But then when the pandemic hit, and with the kids home it got harder and to go into the salon I worked at in Orleans so, I said now’s the time to do this!” She did the research, got all the required licenses and found a trailer. Curb Hair Studio is in a full size trailer, it’s big and comfy. “My husband, John did the alterations needed. He added a mirror, the sinks and more to the existing structure. I was ready to go on November 6, 2020.”
“It’s been a total game changer, I get to use the products I want and take the time I need for each appointment. I get to take as long as I’d like with each client. It’s fabulous!” said Fougere, a Paul Mitchell school graduate and a master stylist. “I’m a traveling hairstylist with a full salon offering not only women’s haircuts but color, highlights, color correction, color blending, balayage, keratin, baby-lights, children’s haircuts and men’s haircuts. I can do it all here in my traveling salon.” The trailer is warm and toasty during the chilly months (she has a generator), and in the summer she can open the back to capitalize on those wonderful Cape Cod breezes through a trailer-wide screen door. “In our first snowfall, it was 70 degrees inside the trailer with a small window open!”
“One of the best haircuts I’ve ever had!” said one recent, new client. “I like my hair short and easy to maintain, and Heidi did exactly what I asked for. I’ve gotten so many compliments, and I’m happy to recommend Heidi to everyone.”
“I like what I do; it’s my career so I keep my prices at an affordable level.” A basic haircut and blow-dry is $25 to $50 depending on the length of your hair and the time involved. A base color, cut and blow-dry is $95. Partial highlights to full highlights are between $140 and $170. You can book a virtual consult with Fougere and the charge for that applies to your trailer hairstyling appointment. She will travel from Eastham to Dennis, “beyond that there is a small travel fee,” she said.
This mother of six (five boys and a girl, and all 10 years old and under!) knows how to make a child’s haircut a fun experience too. “I let them draw on the full length mirror when they are done! You should see what they come up with!” Why not call Curb today and have the trailer come by for the entire family?

This week's Minding Your Business in the Cape Cod Chronicle! Spotlight on Bluefins Sushi & Saki Bar:

Bluefins Sushi & Sake Bar
“We’re more than sushi”!”
513 Main St.
Downtown Chatham
508-348-1573
www.bluefinschatham.com
Open 6 Nights Tuesday – Saturday from 5 p.m.
“We’ve been very fortunate,” said Michelle Orsmond, general manager of Bluefins. “We’ve done a great takeout business during 2020 when all the dining-in restrictions were in place. And our inside dining has gone extremely well also. We keep all patrons socially distant, at both the tables and at the bar. Everyone is well spread out.” They require reservations for inside dining, and their takeout system is efficient and organized. “You can call as early as 2 p.m. to reserve a curbside, pick-up time,” Orsmond said.
“All our customers have been amazing! We can’t say ‘thank you’ to them enough!” Bluefins took a winter break in February and reopened on Thursday, March 11. “Everyone has been so respectful of the 90 minute time limit.” It’s been an interesting year for Orsmond to say the least; she officially took over as the popular restaurant’s general manager on May 1 in the midst of the pandemic. “I had been on staff for eight months at that time, so I was very familiar with the operation. Andy Baler, the owner of this Bluefins and the Bluefins in Falmouth is a great boss.”
“Bluefins is a unique restaurant. We have two separate kitchens; Diego Moto is one of the executive chefs and Hong Chen is the other on the sushi side. We’re so much more than sushi! We feature a full, delicious hot kitchen menu for all those non-sushi customers, and we also craft lots of fully cooked sushi rolls. Both the sushi and the fine kitchen cuisine celebrate and showcase seafood in classically inspired Japanese methods combined with modern Asian style and at the same time honoring the New England seafood cuisine. After all, people come to Chatham for the seafood, and we serve fresh locally-sourced seafood, along with local farm ingredients.” The menu is extensive and believe me, once you find a favorite you’ll want to order it again and again, but you should try something new each time you go! For example there’s miso soup, squid salad, blistered shish*to peppers, crispy chicken wings, Korean ribs and a warm lobster dip among the many appetizers. The list of entrees includes a prime skirt steak, roasted Gianonne Chicken and Chatham Pad Thai. There are 12 specialty rolls, 11 traditional sushi rolls, 11 cooked rolls, combination sushi sashimi dinners and a nigiri and sashimi a la carte menu. There’s a fabulous bar inside too with lots of specialty cocktails. Presently everyone is safely spaced out at the bar but as restrictions ease more seats will be added.
Bluefins is more than dinner, it’s an experience.

Did you know... “Local, raw honey has unique flavors that are lost when industrialized. To help with allergies, you need to have local, raw honey. This will insure that the honey has the allergens native to the area you live in. Buying local is better and not just because it reduces pollution and saves resources.” Wow! I found local honey at Stony Hill Exchange. Joe Nick’s place. On George Ryder rd. Local honey makes you healthier! !! Better for you and makes you better!!! This means that the honey bees in your area are looking out for you!! Don’t you just love that? Stony Hill Exchange
