Happy July! This month celebrates people living with disabilities. People with disabilities are widely underrepresented in STEM, so let's kick it off by celebrating some inspiring women with disabilities in STEM ✨

🩵 Alice Wong: Alice is an American disability rights activist and founder and project coordinator of the Disability Visibility Project, a project collecting oral histories of people with disabilities. She was born with spinal muscular atrophy, which caused her to stop walking by age 8.

💛 Wanda Díaz-Merced: Wanda is an American astronomer who lost all of her sight by her early twenties. She discovered a way to "hear the stars" by creating a technique called sonification, which converted astrophysical data into audio. She is currently the Director of the Arecibo Observatory at the European Gravitational Observatory in Cascina, Italy.

🩷 Farida Bedwei: Farida is a Ghanaian software engineer with cerebral palsy. She is best known for her expertise in software architecture, her deployment of mobile apps, and founding Logicel, a fin-tech company based in Ghana.

💚 Dana Bolles: Dana is an American spaceflight engineer at NASA who was born without arms or legs. She became interested in space at a young age because in space, she would be able to move freely without the use of a wheelchair. She is an advocate for people with disabilities in STEM and the rights of people with disabilities, women, and the LGBTQI+ community.

These are just four of many amazing women in STEM who have disabilities and deserve to be celebrated 👏🎉

Today we are celebrating Sabrina Thompson, an aerospace engineer at NASA and fashion brand founder! Does she look familiar? We have an interview with her on our YouTube ❣️ Here are three things you should know about Sabrina:

1️⃣ She currently works for NASA as the Navigation and Missions Design Engineer at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Her work involves designing and developing orbits and trajectories for future and upcoming missions 🚀

2️⃣ She founded Girl in Space Club, a streetwear fashion brand that was created to make STEM fun and fashionable, fueled by her passion for art, fashion, and STEM! 🛍️

3️⃣ Sabrina also founded STEMulating Art, a program that aims to engage youth in STEM through art projects. She even built the GIRL IN SPACE CLUB (GISC) portal to host an online version of the program. 🎨

Today's is Sirisha Bandla, an American Aeronautical Engineer and current Vice President of Government Affairs for the Virgin Galactic. Here are three reasons you should know her name:

1️⃣ In 2021, she became the second India-born woman to go to space and the fourth person of Indian descent ever to go past the line of space. She travelled to space as a space tourist and to see how different plants react to changes in gravity.🚀

2️⃣ Sirisha served as the Associate Director for the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, an industry association of commercial spaceflight companies, where she worked on various policies with the aim to promote the commercial space industry and make commercial spaceflight a reality.💫

3️⃣ She was on the cover of Vogue India in November 2021 and was named as one of the BBC 100 Women in December 2022. 📸

Sirisha is an incredible who deserves to be celebrated🤩 💙

Shining in the spotlight today is Brenda Laurel, an American interactive designer, video game designer, and researcher! Here are three main things to know about this ✨

1️⃣ As one of the earliest female video game designers, she founded Purple Moon, a company that developed games specifically for girls. 💜

2️⃣ Brenda is considered to be a pioneer in developing virtual reality. At the Banff Center for the Arts in 1994, her installation was the first virtual reality project to separate gaze from direction of movement, support two player games, allow the user to use two hands to participate, and use imagery from natural landscape👾

3️⃣ She has worked for Atari and done interaction consulting work with major companies like Sony Pictures, Apple, and Citibank🕹️

Check out this super easy, quick, and fun outdoor STEM activity! 🌈

The science behind it: the film of soapy water that is on the surface of the sock is compromised of soap molecules! These molecules have a special property called surface tension which is what holds the soapy water together. The air that you blow through the sock creates smaller pockets of air inside the soapy film as it goes through the fabric of the sock. The surface tension keeps the bubble from popping right away, allowing for a giant bubble snake to be created.
