In this wild ride called motherhood, one thing we all crave is community! Whether you’re rocking that baby bump, knee-deep in postpartum chaos, or you’ve got this mom thing figured out, every stage comes with its own share of challenges and triumphs.

As a collective of doulas and photographers in the Charlotte area, our bond is grounded in our love for the Lord, our passion for all things related to birth and motherhood, and our shared commitment to embracing a holistic lifestyle, while also loving Chick-fil-A. 😉

We hope to create a monthly get-together where you can come share your wisdom, seek advice, and build lasting connections with fellow moms who embrace motherhood in every season. Let’s create a safe space where we can uplift, empower, and inspire each other on this incredible journey. 😊

Come as you are, bring your babies (or get away 🤪) and have brunch with us!

The Golden Hour is something that’s talked about by many, but are you aware of the benefits for both mom and baby?

A true golden hour (baby’s first hour) is when the immediate hour after the baby is born, they are left undisturbed skin-to-skin with mom for some quiet time to bond with their new family.

Golden hour has numerous benefits for both mom & baby!
Some benefits for baby include:
-temperature regulation (body heat and love is a better “warmer” than any other device!)
-stabilizes heart, respiratory and oxygen rates
-stabilizes blood sugar
-calms baby & helps them adjust to life on the outside
and more!

Benefits for mom include:
-lower risk of PPH (postpartum hemorrhage)
-early initiation of breastfeeding, which improves chances of breastfeeding long term
-antibodies for mom and baby
-promotes uterine involution
-maximizes bonding with her baby

There are even amazing benefits for skin-to-skin with dad as well! (See my other post about this for more info)

Common reasons people report for not having a golden hour & evidence based responses:
-well check on a healthy baby / ask to have all checks preformed on mom’s chest instead of the warmer
-cleaning of the baby / ask for them to wait until after you have had your golden hour. The bath can (and should) wait! Check out my post on vernix for more information on this topic.
-mom is exhausted or unstable after delivery / ask for dad/birth partner/parents to have skin-to-skin instead
-baby is sent to the NICU / ask if it’s possible to lay a hand on your baby or to simply be present and sit beside them

Of course there are medical circumstances in which the golden hour is not possible, and in those situations, baby & mom’s safety should always come first. If you are separated from your baby for any reason, some things you can do is ask for photos, blankets they have been wrapped in to smell, and pump in the meantime to encourage your milk to come in.

Did you have a golden hour? Why or why not? Would you add anything to this post? Let me know in the comments!

New headshots from ! 🥹

I’m feeling so emotional today in the best way possible. I’ve had such confirmation the past couple weeks that I’m in the right place & doing the right thing by pursuing birth work. This field is so life bringing when approached the right way. I love helping women. I love empowering them. I love embracing birth and death and all the spaces in between. I’m so thankful for this opportunity.

Cord clamping. You’ve probably heard of it, and that it’s an important choice to make, but are you informed of the benefits?

First, let’s talk about the proper way to delay clamp a cord. Standard protocol in hospitals that preform “delayed cord clamping” is 30-60 seconds, however this is not enough. The WHO recognizes that a cord should not be clamped prematurely and, at a minimum, 1-3 minutes should be provided. The PROPER way to delay cord clamping and ensure your baby is receiving all of that precious blood is to wait until the cord is fully white & limp (as seen in the second photo, a stunning image captured by ) did you know that the only benefit to cutting a cord before it is done pulsating is if your baby needs emergency resuscitation?

Delayed cord clamping increases the red blood cell count by 60%, and neonatal blood volume by 30%. That’s a third of your baby’s blood they are missing out on if you opt out of this! Preterm babies should especially receive delayed cord clamping as they need the extra blood, oxygen and iron more than ever at the time of their birth.

Providers may dispute delayed cord clamping due to supposed risk of hemorrhage (there is absolutely no evidence currently to back this claim up) and a slightly increased risk of jaundice, which is a normal for babies to experience and not necessarily a bad thing either (if not in excess!!) as it’s your baby’s way of breaking down blood cells, something they’ve never done before & their body must work hard to do.

Another tactic providers use is cord blood banking, however this can be a pricey option & more often than not, your baby needs that blood & those precious stem cells when they’re born & adjusting to life outside of the womb more than any other time.

Did you do delayed cord clamping? Why or why not? Would you add anything to this post? Let me know in the comments!!
