RACE PREVIEW — Cup Karts East Division final this weekend at OVRP - Oakland Valley Race Park

The Cup Karts North America East Division will close out its second year of competition this weekend at Oakland Valley Race Park in Cuddebackville, N.Y., the site of the division’s inaugural race in April 2023. First titled “North East” and updated to “East” in 2024, this weekend’s race marks the sixth event for CKNA newest division over the last two years including rounds at New Jersey Motorsports Park (2023 and 2024), Pittsburgh International (2023) and United Karting of Baltimore (April 2024).

Series promotor Tony “The Toe” Cirillo offered a preview 📝 of this latest OVRP round, where East Division championships will be on the line in the final CKNA tuneup before the all important Cup Karts Grands 8 this October 10-13 at New Castle Motorsports Park.

Tony reviews opening 2024 rounds at United Karting and NJMP, outlines OVRP's history and unique layout, and takes a look at each class's points battle heading into the weekend...

Get well soon wishes going out to Peyton Worm, who suffered a broken shoulder in the American Kart Road-Racing Alliance (AKRA) / Woodbridge Kart Club KA-100 final Sunday at Summit Point Motorsports Park.

Worm is undergoing surgery today on his shoulder. The Maryland racer picked up his first Cup Karts North America win earlier this season at United Karting in Baltimore, and he was set to enter the Cup Karts East series closer in a couple weeks at OVRP as the Junior class points leader. Unfortunately, Sunday's injury will take him out of racing for the remainder of 2024.

Join us in wishing Peyton a speedy recovery, and we're looking forward to seeing him back behind the wheel as soon as he heals up. 🙏

2024 4-Cycle Super Showdown moved from Phoenix Kart Racing Association to Musselman Honda Circuit in Tucson, date changed to Nov. 8-10

"Showdown Racing is excited to announce that the 2024 Super Showdown will be held at the Musselman Honda Circuit in Tucson, Arizona, on the 2nd weekend of November. The Musselman Honda Circuit is excited to welcome the Super Showdown and has offered to be more of a supporting host and has voiced a strong interest in building long solid relationship that will keep the Super Showdown a much-enjoyed event for many years to come for many more racers," Bowen stated.

With the date change, the Super Showdown moves off the same weekend as the SKUSA Super Nationals in Las Vegas, which it conflicted with in 2023.

The Super Showdown is an annual event for Briggs 206 classes that offers six heat races for each class and tallies points to award an overall winner in each class. Saturday's heats are run counter-clockwise and Sunday's are run clockwise. Friday practice sessions alter between the CCW and CW directions.

For the second consecutive summer, Palmetto, Florida-based Precision Performance Karting traveled to Ontario, Canada with Christopher McKeithan Racing, this time to compete at this past weekend’s Canadian Karting Championships at Hamilton Karting Complex.

McKeithan’s best final came in Briggs Senior Heavy with a P3 result on his No. 319 Coyote Motorsports Zenith. Throughout an up-and-down weekend, the North Carolina driver also qualified P2 of 38 in Briggs Senior and recorded top-five finishes in multiple heat races between Senior and Heavy.

McKeithan offered his thoughts on his weekend north of the border —

“I think the weekend as a whole went very well despite not ending on the top step,” McKeithan said. “We showed some great speed and definitely had the competition worried at different parts over all 4 days. The biggest thing I noticed was that no one wanted to work with me on the track especially if I got shuffled back a couple spots.

“The event itself was definitely well organized and, honestly, run more professional than a lot of the U.S events, which has some bad things as well as good things come along with it. That also probably is something that was caused by it being not only a big 4-cycle race but also a 2-cycle race.

“I’d like to thank John (Seglem) for taking me with him, Jim and Mark Lipari at Coyote for everything they do, and Dave (Koehler) at GT Machine for the power.”

Rest in peace, Mike Birdsell

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The karting community has lost a popular personality, racer, mechanic, coach and friend with the passing of Mike Birdsell.

The 78-year-old battled health issues for a number of years and fell seriously ill a couple weeks ago. He entered a Mooresville, N.C., hospice center on June 22, where he passed away Tuesday afternoon.

An Illinois native, Birdsell began racing at age 13 in the late 1950s, and he devoted the rest of his life to karting.

A four-time national champion driver — as he’d remind us on his voicemail greeting — Birdsell spent his middle-age years traveling the country with his son, Jason, winning numerous races and championships in both 2-cycle and 4-cycle sprint and street racing, mostly on Margay chassis.

Mike relocated to the Charlotte area over a decade ago, where he became a popular friend to many at Trackhouse Motorplex and other tracks and events in the Southeast. He continued to compete in vintage kart racing until recently, including an April 2024 trip to Lamar County Speedway in Barnesville, Ga., for the VKA race, where he’d make his final laps behind the wheel of a go-kart.

In recent years, he worked for the Nitro-Kart team. Through that association, he had an influence on some of today’s top young national karters including James Overbeck, Christopher McKeithan and many others. Birdsell continued to work in the Nitro shop until his illness took him out of work just a few weeks ago.

Off the track, he lived life to the fullest. On weekends, he’s been a staple at Lake Norman live concert venues, where he shared his friendship and lively personality to many around the area.

He was a good friend of ours at Kart Lounge and he provided motivation for our coverage of the sport. One of our most popular early posts was in June 2021 when we shared a video of Mike's induction to the WKA Hall of Fame at the Quincy (Ill.) Grand Prix of Karting. Over the years, he attended nearly every Quincy Grand Prix held through 2022.

We’ll miss his stories and company. RIP, Mike. 🙏

We spoke with Bob Reis of Kelly's Motorsports Park in Batavia, N.Y., over the weekend. He said they've removed all concrete from the corners, and this is the repaving of those sections. New AMB scoring system has been purchased, new bathrooms, grid, and much more have been done. They've also purchased the lot next door to the track for additional parking. Look for racing to return to Kelly's / Batavia in 2025!

4-Cycle Sprint Racing this Friday-Saturday at Carolina Motorsports Park's Carolina Kart Park!

This weekend's Lady Liberty event is the first of only two opportunities to race CMP's technical 0.7-mile kart track in 2024. Saturday's main events will be under the lights via CMP's state-of-the-art Musco lighting system.

𝟒-𝐂𝐘𝐂𝐋𝐄 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐀𝐘 —

A quick heavy shower 🌧️ on lap 1 of the Masters final Sunday at Pitt red-flagged the race and Cup Karts North America officials gave teams 10 minutes to decide on rain or slick Vega Tires and setup.

The rain lasted for only minutes, and everyone went back out on slicks. The race was an interesting one with drivers having to navigate a damp circuit on slicks through the opening laps.

By the second half of the 15-lapper, the track had mostly dried and lap times were within a half to 1 second of Saturday’s heat races.

Eric Fagan (175 MGM), who slipped to P4 early in the contest, worked the bottom lane later to make passes on John Price (444) and Todd Baron (11) to regain the lead. Fagan would go on to win by 0.947 over Price’s Coyote.
