I'm super excited to announce that David Ellefson will be hosting the premiere of the new Official Trailer for our film This Was My Life: The Story of Nick Menza at NAMM 2024! He and Nick's sister Donia along with OHM/Kings of Thrash guitarist Chris Poland and close friend Dr. Randall Kertz, who was Ellefson’s bass tech from 1989-90, will be on hand for the showing and for Q&A afterwards. DOCUMENTARY TRAILER ON LATE MEGADETH DRUMMER NICK MENZA TO PREMIERE AT THE ELLEFSON COFFEE CO. BOOTH DURING THE 2024 NAMM SHOW

Ellefson Coffee Co.®, the premium hand roasted coffee company created by GRAMMY® Award winning bassist and coffee connoisseur David Ellefson, will be exhibiting at the NAMM Show inside the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA January 25-28, 2024.

The Ellefson Coffee Co.® booth number 5030 located inside Hall D will feature the VIP Rock & Roll Lounge Experience, and will premiere the official trailer for the documentary film This Was My Life: The Story of Nick Menza on Saturday January 27, 2024 at 12pm PST.

The premier will be hosted by David Ellefson & Nick Menza’s sister Donia Menza Ontiveros, and will be open to any NAMM attendees and media at the show. A Q&A will follow the premier joined by OHM/Kings of Thrash guitarist Chris Poland and close friend Dr. Randall Kertz, who was Ellefson’s bass tech from 1989-90, both of whom are featured in the film.

Says Ellefson, "After several years in the making, it's a real honor to be able to give a sneak preview of what this film will ultimately look like. Nick had a storied career and an even more incredible life. I'm proud to be part of this documentary and very honored that we can utilize our booth during the NAMM show as the initial theater for fans to see this beautiful story unfold.”

Donia adds, “The Menza family is super excited to finally see this film come to fruition, and even more excited to have David narrating the exciting and unique life that Nick lived. I am honored to be a part of this film and to be able to share stories of my wonderful and loving brother."

Says Director Holly Mollohan Grayson, “This special project is one that is very close to my heart. I’m a part of the generation that spent the entirety of their teenage years in the 1990s. The soundtrack of our lives played every day on MTV and Headbangers Ball. That was the period of time when Nick was making his mark as a metal legend in Megadeth, so of course I was very familiar with his work. I am honored to be able to explore who he was beyond his amazing talent for the drums."

Nick Menza is best-known as the drummer for thrash metal titans Megadethfrom 1989-1998, playing on some of the band’s most commercially successful albums to date, including Rust In Peace, Countdown to Extinction, Youthanasia & Cryptic Writings. Following his time in Megadeth, Menza wrote his memoir “MEGA LIFE” and in 2016, while performing at The Baked Potato jazz club in Studio City, CA suffered a massive heart attack and died.

The documentary film is directed by Holly Mollohan Grayson for Screaming Butterfly Entertainment, in association with Ellefson Films, and narrated by David Ellefson. The film highlights Nick’s life growing up in a musical household in Southern California and continues through his legendary career with Megadeth and beyond.

Some shots from the production of our upcoming feature documentary which is ALMOST COMPLETEEEE!! These are from our interviews in Los Angeles with David Ellefson and Jeff Young and the interview in Florida with Rob Corsie! All of these guys are super awesome. It's finally almost time! I may fall over and die from all of the hours I've spent in the editing dungeon lately after hours....cleaning audio on the cut, doing final placements of b-roll etc but FINALLY SOON!
Special thanks to my post production pals Matt Crutchfield for hopping in and doing some animations and Jane Saunders for contributing a super emotional score!
And thanks to Rob Bolger for wrangling us all and keeping us on track, and of course, big thanks to the family of Nick Menza for trusting us with this film.

I'm super excited to announce that the Screaming Butterfly Entertainment crew will one again represent a project at the 2023 GenreBlast Film Festival!

Our short film I AM OF YOU has been selected as an Official Selection at the festival that will be held in Wi******er, VA at the Alamo Draft House Cinema on Labor Day Weekend.

This festival is Named one of MovieMaker Magazine's Top 50 Best Genre Film Fests In The World.
It also is consistently Ranked Top 100 Best Reviewed Film Fests on FilmFreeway!

My Feature Film, MY AUTOPSY, won several big awards there a couple years back, and also I was the editor on John Hale 's DEEP IN THE HEART segment in the anthology WORST LAID PLANS that screened at last year's festival.

Honored to bring another project to Genreblast! It truly is an amazing festival with awesome genre filmmakers. So stoked!

Here's another sneak peek into the editing dungeon and another clip from our upcoming feature documentary, This Was My Life - The Story of Nick Menza! Here we see Randy Kertz, Sober Companion for Megadeth back in the day, talking about a little scuffle he got into with Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine. Nick Menza jumped in with classic Nick style. Also, I inadvertently plugged two bands in this video who are close to my heart. The band on my shirt are my friends Relative Obscurity and the sticker on my water bottle is the band of fellow Screaming Butterfly crew member Rick Grayson, Dunkard & Wheeling .

MORE FILM FESTIVAL NEWS:
It's been a pretty great week here at the SBE camp. We just found out that TWO of our recent music videos are Official Selections at the 2022 Lake Charles Film Festival !

BRIDGES by Dunkard & Wheeling and NEVER COMING BACK by Chris Ransom Weaver will both be screening at the festival in competition at the festival in Lake Charles, Louisiana on October 7-8.

NEW FESTIVAL SELECTION ANNOUNCEMENT AND SHORT FILM NEWS:
In February of 2009 I reached out to an author of a story that I found while randomly browsing the web. That story was "The Denizens of Louie Shepard". The author was Michael Wolf.

Turns out, Mr. Wolf was a fascinating individual - an accomplished song writer, repaired airborne computer systems for the F-16 fighter jet in The Air Force, a computer programmer for office needs, a syndicated cartoonist for King Features Syndicate, a comic book letter for Image comics, a Battelle colleagueship award winner and college attendee, before becoming enamored with writing. At the time, he was also suffering from severe multiple sclerosis. He gave me permission to adapt his story into a short film.

Life and filmmaking have a way of getting away from us sometimes. It took me until May 2021 to take Mr. Wolf up on the offer. I never forgot that cool story of a man tortured by his inner denizen. I had just been dealt a hard hit professionally and financially and was about to enter one of the worst periods of my life personally (2021 and 2022 have been particularly horrific for me....perfect time to do a horror short.) I adapted the short story into a horror short, and away we went. (sorry for omitting the spiders, Mr. Wolf.) Gave the short a catchy new name - "I AM OF YOU" after a particularly pivotal line delivered by The Denizen himself.

The aforementioned personal issues delayed the editing of the film. BUT I finished it on September 1, 2022. Finally.

I am super proud to announce that we are an official selection at the 14th annual World Music and Independent Film Festival. This will be the fourth time SBE has been selected for the festival - CRUCIVIXEN, MY AUTOPSY, and BRIDGES have all done well there. Let's hope I AM OF YOU does well too.

Additionally, we are planning on having a premiere for the film. The tentative date is Ocbober 8th, but more details will be released whenever they are finalized. Check out a few stills from the film below.

Life Of Late MEGADETH Drummer NICK MENZA To Be Celebrated With Virtual Event On 6th Anniversary Of His Death. Saturday, May 21st 1 p.m. PST. 4 p.m. EST. 9 p.m. GMT

David Ellefson and Holly Mollohan from Screaming Butterfly Entertainment will host a live virtual event for the six year anniversary of Nick’s passing, a celebration of Nick's life.

David and Holly will be answering viewer questions during a Q&A session for the upcoming feature-length Nick Menza documentary film "This Was My Life: The Story Of Nick Menza".

Fans will get the opportunity to stream the live event and get a behind the scenes sneak preview of the upcoming feature-length Nick Menza documentary film "This Was My Life: The Story Of Nick Menza".
This will include an exclusive listening party of the film's soundtrack, Including brand new video content, along with other bonus material.
The event will also feature a few, very well known special mystery guests musicians involved with the writing and recording of the film's soundtrack. These newly written songs feature previously recorded drum tracks by Nick Menza and what's known to be his final studio drum recordings.
