Do you think about what you think about?

It’s an abstract question, but seriously, it matters a lot. A brain study showed that the average human thinks over 70,000 thoughts a day, and those thoughts have a huge impact on how we feel and who we become.

As a photographer, I hear a lot of people express insecurities about the way they look, their awkwardness, their weight, their finances, etc. There are a lot of practical things that we try to do to help you feel comfortable on camera, but in my opinion, a more long-term goal is to learn to see yourself differently.

One practice that I have found extremely helpful came from pastor who journals with 3 colored pens.

With the 1st color, he writes his unfiltered thoughts & emotions. Being honest about his insecurities, fears, frustrations, etc.

Then with the 2nd color, he writes out a scripture verse or verses that speak truth into those different emotions.

And then with the 3rd color, he rewrites his journal entry, allowing his mind to bend around the word of God.

How beautiful is that y'all?

For me today, it was as simple as this. I was walking out of the grocery store and feeling poor (groceries are expensive am I right??). The thoughts started coming, maybe I need another job, maybe I'm not good at this, I don’t know if I’m going to make it, etc. And I caught myself, and said out loud: “He takes care of the birds of the air and the flowers of the field, He'll take care of me." Boom, release worry, breathe in trust.

I hope we can all learn to do that more and more.

1st Saturday in a while without a wedding and I’ve loved it! It feels so good to take a mental break and sabbath really. I cooked, went to the gym, meal prepped, found an awesome podcast, and will be hanging out with young adults tonight. Days like this remind me that rest is sacred and it’s good to take care of your body, mind, and soul. Hope you have all had a great Saturday as well! :)

Recently I’ve been leaving photo sessions just absolutely pumped and this weekend was no exception!! Gabriel + Ary were the sweetest couple and I loved that we were able to capture such great photos just parking on the side of the road! We can credit part of that to how gorgeous California is, but I think the other part is about the connection between these two! They reminded me that love is less about where you’re at, and more about who you’re with. What a treat to document a love like that!!

Engagement photos, but get artsy with it!! 🎨 That was the goal this Saturday!

When we woke up on Saturday morning, the weather wasn’t ideal for an outdoor photo shoot, so we decided to pivot and shoot mostly indoors. Photographers know that indoor lighting can be a bit more tricky, so internally I was crossing my fingers that everything would work out!

Well I’m pleased to say that I think we crushed it! A super creative & fun shoot and I’m in love with the photos!

What made the whole experience so great was that Jay + Miriam were just so flexible and go-with-the-flow type people. Their positivity and joy made my job so easy, and I feel like walked away with some new friends! ☺️

I just needed this to live forever on my feed! What you’re seeing is me conquering my greatest fear, being in the middle of the dance circle!!! Throughout 2021 wedding season I gradually grew from the head-bob guy, to a little shoulder movement, to joining in a few dances, and now look at me out here busting a move! Seriously though, I had so much fun celebrating + so when they started chanting “CAMERAMAN, CAMERAMAN” I couldn’t resist! 🕺

I’M MOVING! 📢

Yep, you heard that right! In August of this year I’ll be moving from NC to Dallas, Texas to begin studying ! This has been a dream of mine for several years now, and I’m pumped that the timing worked out to say YES!! I’m also excited to be living with one of my good friends from college and filming some Texas weddings, I mean Yeehaw!! 🤠

Ps. for all my North Carolina couples who have already booked with me, don’t worry I won’t be charging you any extra for travel! Still here for you!!

Jeffrey + Kennedi! They spent most of their relationship in different time zones, with Jeffrey deployed in Japan and Kennedi here in the States. In fact, Jeffrey flew back to the US just days before the wedding to officially propose!! I love how Kennedi said it, “we have spent most of our relationship apart, but this ceremony is the mark of our forever walk together loving the Lord and being who he has created us to be together.” So grateful to capture moments like that on video for such sweet people!

This dad’s speech was so heartfelt and sweet and it reminded me of why I love filming weddings in the first place! My Approach to Photography

I like to take what I call “lifestyle photos” which falls somewhere in between traditional portraits & documentary photography. Believe it or not, I started developing this style while I was living overseas in China.

During my 2 years there, I took a lot of photos and videos (documenting) everything about my life around me. I was so fascinated by the tall buildings, the words I couldn’t read yet, the tiny cars, and of course, the people. If you don’t know, Chinese people are AWESOME but they can be a bit camera shy at first. I wanted to take pictures of my students and strangers that I would meet, but I knew that it would be pretty unlikely that I would be able to get them to stand still, smile, and let me take their picture. Plus, doing that just didn’t feel as authentic to me as catching them living their life.

Now that I’m back in the States, I try to keep my experiences from China in mind. I know that most people in America who book a photo session are fine with smiling for the camera, but after a few photo sessions with everyone smiling, I started to realize that my photos were still missing something. They were too “perfect”, and not in a good way. Everyone was symmetrical, and posed decently well, but their expressions were stiff, lifeless, and boring. It was a good picture, but like a yearbook photo, it didn’t communicate any emotions or connection.

That’s when I made the switch in my mind, that my photography wouldn’t be about “good pictures” it would be about connection and story telling. I want the people that book photo sessions with me to leave laughing, and to have photos that help them remember this moment in their lives. Whether you are newly engaged, you’re a mom with small kids, or you’re a graduating senior, I truly believe that my photography can help you tell your story.
