Even in these uncertain times at UNC, where the pandemic has disrupted every aspect of campus life, there’s been one thing that hasn’t changed – UNC men’s basketball coach Roy Williams with his Carolina blue jackets, sneakers, and folksy expressions.
However, now that’s changing too. Williams announced his retirement Thursday after 33 years as a Division One coach, 18 of which were as head coach at UNC.
He finishes his career with 903 wins in the NCAA – the third most of all time. Williams coached the Heels to national championships in 2005, 2009 and 2017. However, after two losing seasons, Williams took personal responsibility for his team’s struggles.

For the first time, UNC students will have a convenient way to get COVID-19 vaccines. Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz announced the university will open a vaccine site on campus for students and staff Wednesday.

North Carolina just marked one year of COVID-19 shutdowns. However, with increasing vaccinations and declining case rates, state leaders are starting to relax some pandemic restrictions. Governor Cooper’s February 26 executive order increased capacity for indoor dining to 30 percent, allowing restaurants to serve more customers. The order also extended alcohol serving hours until 11:00 P.M. That lets bars welcome customers indoors for the first time in nearly a year.
Isaac Klein has more on how people in Chapel Hill are reacting to the change.

Faculty, students and staff across the university system may finally see a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel. Thousands more North Carolinians are now eligible to receive their COVID-19 vaccines, as members of vaccine group 3. That means essential frontline workers including university employees and work-study students can finally receive their shots. However, many are struggling to find appointments.

Carolina Connection Managing Editor Will Gorham had a rifle put at his back and was pushed to the ground while reporting on a UNC Campus Emergency Drill. The drill took place at the Outdoor Education Center on campus this morning. This is the audio from the incident.
