In honor of Black History Month, we would like to highlight the impact of notable Black journalists in American history. First up, we have Ida B. Wells. Born in Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1862, Wells was best known for being an American investigative journalist, educator and early leader in the civil rights movement. She was also one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and advocated tirelessly for the voting rights for all women. She became a household name for her work documenting the lynchings of African Americans in the South years after slavery was abolished. She is often referred to as the “patron saint of African American muckraking.” Wells set the stage for Black investigative journalists to center their work around activism to progress and influence American life. The work of Wells was historically monumental, growing on the foundation of the antebellum Black press, which fought slavery. However, her work was often overlooked because it emphasized advocacy for Black press and exposed uncivil actions such as lynchings of Black people.

“In 2018, Trevy McDonald became the first Black woman to earn tenure on the journalism faculty at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The milestone, she said, was way overdue for a prominent public university that started teaching journalism in 1909 and established a journalism school in 1950.

What bothers McDonald even more: She remains the only Black woman with tenure at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2021/06/08/unc-black-professors-hannah-jones-tenure/

Black female faculty members, long underrepresented in American academia, say it pains them to see the leader of the 1619 Project hired without tenure. “It hurts,” one said. “It’s a knife in the heart.”
