The People's Channel

The People's Channel Local Media: Learn. Create. Watch.

In the early 1990s a small group of concerned community members and media activists organized for better Community Access in Chapel Hill. In 1996 Robert Gwyn, Eva Metzger and Vimala Rajendran signed the incorporation papers that created The Peoples Channel (TPC) as a non-profit organization. The founders helped organize public support for a community-run organization, responsive to community needs

, to be the operator of public access for Chapel Hill. Previously, Time Warner Cable had been the operator, but community members wanted a local organization to be guardian of such an important community resource. TPC offers a place for all community members to have free access to television production and ensures effective uses of community media.

Just added a couple pages to the TPC website. One has a table listing brief info on each program, including a program category, so you can search for program types like "Current Affairs" or "Health". I had to rely heavily on AI to generate the table, so if you find errors please let me know. The other page gives all the weekly showtimes for each program, so you can, e.g., find all the times that Democracy Now! will be showing this week. You can find these two pages under the TV Schedules menu item. Let me know if you like these pages!

Search for your favorite show to see when it will be showing this week in Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Hillsborough or in Durham.

Tonight at midnight on TPC, catch one of Ray's favorite movies, The Great Rupert (1950), with Jimmy Durante. Rosalinda Amendola, the daughter of happy but impoverished former acrobats is in love with the boy next door, aspiring composer Pete Di**le. Though Pete's parents are wealthy, his miserly father Frank insists on hiding his money from his investments in the wall of their family home.

The situation changes when Joe Mahoney, a vaudeville performer has fallen on hard times and has to leave his best friend and stage companion, Rupert a dancing squirrel, in Frank and Rosalinda's town where he will have to fend for himself with the other squirrels and live in a tree. Unsatisfied with tree life, Rupert gains access to the Di**le home and unbeknownst to Frank, has his bed in Frank's hidden cache of money.
