Fashion club had a meeting after school on Monday, Oct. 28. This club is focused on learning and doing fashion-related activities and was formed for those who want to learn more about fashion and help the environment with it. The board is composed of senior president Mya Deceano-Espinosa and junior co-vice presidents Dulce Ambrocio-Lopez and Gabriela Velasco-Velasco.

In this meeting, they covered different makeup trends such as trashy girl, clean girl and birthday makeup. They also held a Halloween costume contest with prizes for the top three winners. First place went to sophomore Lily Garod, second was sophomore Jinx Torres and third place was to Deceano. Besides doing a costume contest, they are planning to do more activities for the club in the future including thrift shopping, bleaching black t-shirts, making club t-shirts and doing their makeup.

“Anyone really, whoever wants, whoever is really interested in fashion, they can come and join even if it’s just for one meeting,” Deceano said. “It’s really fun to be here.”

Meetings are held once a month and can be during CC or after school in room 566. More information on club meetings and events can be found on .

Students talked, laughed, played and crafted during the International Thespian Society (ITS) Halloween Bash. It was open to all enrolled students in a theater class on Friday, Oct. 25 from 6:30 to 9:45 p.m.. There were students from classes such as Theater Arts 1-4, Technical Theater 1-4 and Design and Production 1-4.

The event had no entry fee and offered activities in a few locations with access to the school. These included: mini pumpkin painting, bracelet making, cupcake decorating and snacks in the black box, co****le in the theater hallway, games such as mafia and the noodle game in the choir room and a Halloween costume contest in the auditorium.

There were students who wore costumes and participated in the Halloween costume contest. The ones who decided the top three winners were the ITS senior board members: president Amelia Marsh, vice president of acting Zachary Topscher, director of activities Anya Saffari and vice president of tech Sarah Dodson.

“Students should join theater because it’s a really great learning experience and you meet a lot of new people,” Marsh said. “We wanted people to be able to hang out with each other in an organized event where they didn’t have to worry about paying to get in and have a relaxing night and enjoy some time with friends.”

More information and updates on events or shows in the drama department can be found in .

PSAT season is officially over, for the 24-25 school year. The three-hour test was held on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The test gives juniors an opportunity to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship Program.

Approximately 50,000 juniors who take the PSAT across the US are recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program and may be eligible for scholarships. Students who qualify are notified the next September.

Although the PSAT and SAT have very similar sturctures they scores and the assessments slightly differ. The PSAT helps students prepare for the SAT by providing insights about skills so that students can improve for the SAT.

“After taking the PSAT, I felt relieved but also anxious, wondering how I did,” sophomore Nora Read said. “It’s like a weight lifted, but now there is new pressure of waiting for the scores to see
what we need to work on.”

FCPS students will get their result on Oct.24. Students can access these scores from the counselor or the mobile app Big Future School.

Students played games outside and in the gym, such as pickleball, volleyball and ping-pong. They watched a movie in the auditorium, they created crafts in various rooms, they could also study or relax in the library. The first Wellness Fair of the school year occurred on Oct. 10 from
10:05 to 11:05.

Some locations had more than 50 students present, such as the gym and outside on the track and field. There was also an animal petting station with bunnies, dogs and alpacas. One new addition to the Wellness Fair was ping-pong, with many ping-pong tables in the gym lobby.

“My favorite activity in the Wellness Fair is playing soccer with my friends, spikeball or volleyball,” sophomore Jolina Evans said. “The most popular activity is probably soccer or maybe even pickleball since I see a lot of people there.”

Chantilly High School planned this Wellness Fair after the PSAT/SAT day so that students could have the time to relax and have fun with others. The next Wellness Fair will be held on Nov. 22.

Actors aren’t the only ones preparing for the fall musical “Matilda;” the technical theater students are also getting ready. The technical theater crew stays after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 5:00 to work on lights, sound, props, outfits and sets.

They started set design in early September and construction last week. Students in charge of props and costume designs put their ideas on a mirror and discuss with one another.

“First, I had to go through the process of drawing all the pictures, figuring out how everything is going to go and how long it would take to be done with it,” head of set design and co-head of set construction junior Peyton Dunham said. “Right now, we are starting to build some of our smaller pieces, like our turntable.”

CHS Red Cross Society had their second meeting after school on Oct. 3. Red Cross is a non-profit humanitarian organization whose purpose is to provide assistance to the community.

“It helps the community by addressing important problems that are going on in the world,”sophomore historian Meenal Nagappan said. “It brings attention and helps solve those problems.”

The Red Cross Society holds meetings every month where students can perform service hours. In this meeting, students played a world country themed bingo game. In future meetings they will be making cards for veterans and hospital patients along with comfort kits.

CHS has added new classrooms, but some are still not finished so a few teachers share classrooms with others. Some special education teachers also move around the school with their carts, because they help different teachers with teamed classes. They carry their belongings in a cart, and either work in the work rooms or have an office setup within their shared class.

English teacher Ekim Tektas and Learning Disabilities teacher Kierstin Wepking have to do this. While Tektas does not mind moving around, it can still be difficult at times.

“This gives me a chance to figure out the layout of the school, but the only downside is having to carry a lot of books with me in the cart and having to keep track of work,” Tektas said.

WTOP news anchor and reporter John Aaron visited broadcast and news media students on Thursday, Sept. 26, to share his experiences and insights in the journalism industry. Aaron began by writing in high school, then continued in college as a communications major, focusing on broadcast, especially radio.

“I hope that I could make journalists more interested in the future,” Aaron said. “Much of what people think journalism is, is actually a bunch of facts and part of what we do is to make those facts more relatable and compelling.”

Aaron discussed the importance of accurate storytelling in his career. Aaron explained that it is important to be consistent and manage time wisely, especially in a deadline-oriented business like journalism.

Students wait in a long line to enter the athletic training room in the gym lobby, seeking help on recent injuries. CHS has athletic trainers involved with sports teams to treat students.

“We treat many different injuries varying from a twisted ankle to concussions,” senior athletic trainer student aid Evelyn Szachara said. “It is crucial for athletes to be aware that the athletic training room is open after school everyday.”

Katelyn Bishop, Rachel Scherbenske and Maegan Milliet are the certified trainers for CHS, who have Athletic Trainer Student Aids (ATSAs), who work with them. Students must take sports medicine, which is available for grades nine through twelve, before applying to be an ATSA.

From cashiering to pool cleaning, many students spent their summer working part-time jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 54.5% of teens have jobs while also being enrolled in school, requiring numerous schedule alterations.

“I don’t get home until around 10 p.m., meaning I don’t get to start homework until later that night,” senior Rehaan D’Souza, who works at Bruster’s Ice Cream parlor, said. “It gets frustrating sometimes.”

The challenges of balancing school and work has led students to develop strategies to integrate their jobs with their academic schedules. The concept of time-management can allow time for both work and school.

“I always try to do my homework at school,” D’Souza said. “It’s much easier to manage my work-life schedule that way.”
