The Photojournalism class, also known as yearbook, held their monthly deadline party to celebrate sending their pages to the printing company on time on Feb. 28. They have a total of 6 deadlines with their last one on May 5.

This class is a sequential elective that produces the Odyssey yearbook. The process of creating it begins before the school year begins. The editors-in-chief, seniors Alexis Huff and Patricia Ramos-Quintanilla, meet with yearbook adviser Luc Nguyen over the summer to plan the book. They decide the theme, design structure and content of the book. Once the school year starts, they train the new staff, create the book, send it to their printing company in Kansas City, review it for potential issues and distribute it to the community.

According to Nguyen, their printing company expects them to submit a certain number of pages monthly so that they don’t get fined. If they achieve this goal, they hold a party to celebrate. In addition, the book is 324 pages, hard cover and full cover that costs a lot to print.

“We hope that people will buy [the yearbook] given that it’s something you can look back on,” Nguyen said. “As someone who is 10 years gone from high school, I do still treasure my yearbooks. I think it’s worth the money despite how ridiculously high the price is, which we don’t want to be that high.”

Students can order a yearbook at yearbookordercenter.com using the code 4166 for $75 and online sales are scheduled to close on May 10. They also have the option to purchase a copy in-person at distribution for $80 using cash or check. According to Nguyen, there is a possibility for them to be sold out so purchasing online is the only way to guarantee one can get a book during distribution.

Approximately 90 students and staff members participated in the annual Health Occupation Student America (HOSA) Blood Drive on Feb. 19. This contributed to a total of 79 units of blood collected with each unit of blood having the potential to save three lives.

With a national shortage of blood, the Academy tries to give back to the community as much as they can and this event allows them to do so. During the school day, eligible students were sent passes to donate blood in the lecture hall. To be eligible, a student must be 16 years old or older and fill out a form with their parents approval.

Once they register and arrive in the lecture hall, they need to go through a screening process where the technicians check if their weight is at least 110 pounds, if they have a normal blood pressure and temperature, and if they are not anemic which is a condition where a person has low levels of healthy red blood cells. Recipients also get the choice to give a whole blood, platelet or double red donation.

“If anybody has the ability to donate blood and you don’t have that fear of needles, then you absolutely should donate blood,” Academy resource teacher and an organizer of the blood drive Amy Scheibel said. “It’s a great cause.”
