Are you 100% confident in the quality of the marketing you put out there? I received an email this morning that made me stop and think - about what I am posting here!
At the end of the day, my intention is to embrace the reality that not everyone is going to love me! Although I did have a niece who grew up believing everyone loved her, and I am not so sure that belief was not self-perpetuating!
But, back to the intended message... it is ok that not everyone loves you and you should never allow that to stop your sending out regular, content rich messages from which others can - if they so choose - benefit.
Stop worrying about whether it is too often, not often enough - or if something you say might annoy someone... or bore them... or what if, what it, what it! With this much fear, you become immobilized and absolutely nothing can happen for you - or for the readers you hope to serve.
I have studied the marketing guru, Seth Godin, for a long time, and he has a philosophy that I think belongs in the minds of authors, which, paraphrased, goes something like this: Your job in book marketing is to write messages for readers who do love what you stand for - and forget the rest!
When you try to please all the people, all the time... you end up pleasing no one. The trick, in building a healthy Author Platform is to remember exactly who your ideal reader is - and concentrate your message content on them only. When you get clarity around this... you can stop worrying and write messages which are interesting and entertaining.
I had to go through the exact same mind shift! In my goal to be authentic and in service - it became much easier to focus on my objective and my audience and forget about trying to impress the next "possible" reader... those who know, and have come to count on the messages I share will be waiting in the wings for the next, and the next, and the next piece of wisdom I share. And those who think, "Nah - she is not for me," well, I get that feeling too; I have been there as well!
So... ask yourself the question this morning, "Have I made this kind of a marketing mindshift to I know what I send out is fun, engaging and effective?"
What is the best marketing tool or technique you have found thus far in building your Author Platform?
