“Godspell Jr.” said Director Cody Hays, is based around the Gospel of Matthew and Luke which follows Jesus’ life throughout the ministry up through the crucifixion.
“In most productions, casts follow the original staging which is very minimal and colorful as it was in the 1970s when it first came to Broadway,” said Hays. “Our production is quite different. My vision when staging this show was to set it in an air raid bunker during the children’s evacuation in World War II.”
Hays said their casting is non-traditional with Jesus being played by “the incredible Elizabeth Lindsey and John the Baptist being played by the incomparable Sarah Crow.”
“These two young ladies are tasked with keeping the rest of the cast safe and entertained in the bunker throughout the show, which they do by performing different parables and singing songs that remind all of us that no matter what troubles plague us on Earth, we should keep our eyes toward Heaven. I am so incredibly proud of this cast as they have worked so hard to breathe life into this production and I truly believe to be one of the most talented casts I have ever worked with.”
Because of the nature of the show and the length, Hays said, there will not be an intermission.
“The show is only around an hour long, and it is intended to be done all at once so that the audience becomes fully immersed in the story,” said Hays. “We are also recommending that children under the age of six be left home for this one because there are some more intense scenes towards the end that could be upsetting to them. There will also be loud noises (specifically air raid sirens) and some flashing lights, so if anyone is sensitive to those effects, please take proper precautions.”
“This show has been an absolute joy to work on and I cannot imagine a better way to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of TheatreCentre than right where it all began,” said Hays. “This is a truly beautiful show full of fun music, a lot of dancing, and as much heart as we can put into it, and we hope that everyone can make it out to see us.”
