ENTERTAINMENT | Freshman Rebecca Grum writes about the end of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

After spanning five different continents, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has finally come to an end, leaving off in Vancouver Canada. The tour created a cultural moment; even Swifties who did not attend the concert found ways to get involved.

“It was always something to look forward to,” freshman and two-time Eras Tour attendee Pearl Bio said, reflecting on her experience watching the live streams.

Currently, any club at Southern Lehigh can reward its members with a cord, however, only a few take advantage of this opportunity. This small action will ensure the graduation ceremony better reflects the diverse interests of the student body.

SPORTS | Seniors Charlie Petri, Gianna Cusumano, and Kelcie Wagner report on the girls’ and boys’ basketball 2025 winter season.

Although both teams had a slow start to their season, they are confident that their communication will help them bounce back. They plan to achieve this by reflecting on their game performance and emphasizing team bonding.

“We started by playing the hardest teams in the league,” said Gluck, “but we should be able to get some more wins.”

SPORTS | The Spotlight Editorial Staff covers Southern Lehigh football’s historic success, becoming the first team to make it to the state semifinal playoff.

The football team won the PIAA District XI 4A championship over Bethlehem Catholic and advanced to states. However, they were defeated by Bonner-Prendie in the semifinals. The team is still grateful for their success and record-breaking season.

“I am very proud of where we have come from. We have worked really hard in the offseason, and every year before that; this just shows our hard work,” said senior Gijs Fooji.

FEATURES | Junior Ryan Stehlik writes about Mr. Matt Spengler’s first year as the Southern Lehigh High School athletic director.

Mr. Spengler became the athletic director after working in Emmaus. He is excited to not only contribute to students’ athletic success but also their personal growth.

The book is the third installment of Toni Adeyemi’s Orisha series. Hodges explained that the book was too fast-paced and introduced too many flat characters.

FEATURES | Freshman Katya Mikhalik reports on the new club Morgan’s Message and their mission to advocate for prioritizing mental health in sports.

The club was founded this fall by Isabel Garcia and Anna Schaninger. Together they work to promote mental health awareness and support Southern Lehigh sports.

“I joined because I think that it is very important to get the out about mental health,” said senior Katherine Grum, who plays hockey and tennis.

OUR WORLD | Senior Alexis Behrens reports on the revitalization project of Meadow Park.

Meadow Park was restored in memory of Board Vice President Mr. Donald Miles, who passed away in February 2024. In addition to commemorating Mr. Miles, donors of WDIY have also been invited to plant trees in honor of their deceased loved ones.

“Local parks are such a vital park of life in communities like our own, bringing together people of all different backgrounds,” said vice-president of Southern Lehigh High School’s Ecology Club Robert Morgan.

FEATURES | Senior Kelcie Wagner writes about Farrah Smith’s journey to restore the MiniTHON club at the high school after it was cancelled last year.

MiniTHON is a smaller version of THON at Penn State which raises money for cancer research. The club existed at Southern Lehigh for many years until student could not find a replacement for their teacher advisor. Smith is now running a food cart to raise money in the absence of the club.

“We are always looking for donations of any kind, and if you don’t want to donate, we could always use help running the cart during Spartan [period],” Smith said.

OPINION | Senior Tessa Di Cesare shares her perspective on the dying tradition of Black Friday.

Di Cesare explains how the craze of Black Friday died down after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the chaotic fun of Black Friday shopping is missed during the Cyber Monday experience.

“It isn’t the Black Friday that we used to see videos about and stuff. Put generation will never experience those long lines at Best Buy or those fights breaking out at Walmart over a television or iPad,” junior Patrick D’Amico said.

SPORTS | Junior Dylan Smith reports on girls volleyball team’s recent success.

This season was the first time since the 2019-2020 season that the team made it to the state playoffs. The volleyball team was led to success by players such as seniors Alexis Hoyer and Trinity-Sky Hunte and juniors Mia Stanton and Natalie Pristas.

“They set goals for the beginning of the year. They know where they want to be. I think the league title was first then districts then beyond, that is everything extra. And, we know we are good enough to compete with anyone in the state,” said head volleyball coach Mr. Donald West.

NEWS | Senior Morgan Downing reports on Southern Lehigh’s unique tradition of challenging the homecoming court to raise money for charity.

The senior class nominated twenty of their peers to fundraise for a charity of their choice. The ten students who raised the most money secured their spot on the homecoming court. Senior Jacalyn DeSimone was grateful for the opportunity to help her community.

“It meant the world being able to support the Alzheimer’s Association. I think the biggest thing is it just felt like I was honoring my grandpa,” DeSimone said.

After a busy club rush, the club received more interest than previous years, bringing new energy and ideas. Junior Drew Pera shared how he believed the club will help prepare him for his future career.

“I definitely want to learn how to start a business,” Pers said. “I believe FBLA will help me achieve that.”
