THE DENNY AWARDS

A. ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC MUSIC COMPOSITION

1. Electro-Acoustic Music Composition
In this category, contestants will submit an original music composition not longer than 6 minutes that must be an original electro-acoustic composition, utilizing electronic and/or electronically modified acoustic resources, not commercially published or awarded a prize in any other competition. The digital files of this music will be sent to the following address, [email protected], for preliminary round adjudication. Deadline for submittal is May 31st, 2019.

2. Electro-Acoustic Music Composition for Video/Film
This category is akin to electronic music composition for film, television or electronic games. Each segment of video and music submitted for composition must be less than 6 minutes. Submitted works must be an original electro-acoustic composition, utilizing electronic and/or electronically modified acoustic resources, not commercially published or awarded a prize in any other competition. A video file can be downloaded from web address, www.DIFAT.com or www.DIFAT.cn after March 15th, 2009. The contestant shall compose electro-accoustic music to synchronize to the provided video for the best cinematic effect. The digital files of this music matched to video will be sent to the following address, [email protected], for preliminary round adjudication. Deadline for submittal is May 31st, 2019.

3. Electro-Acoustic Music Recording & Mixing (2 Classes of Awards)
This competition category tests the contestants’ ability to maximize the quality of recorded sound and music post-production manipulation in order to obtain the highest satisfaction from the listener.
i) Competition for Recording --- open to all contestants who will submit musical works that contestant has demonstrated credit for musical recording. Contestants can submitted a work that is in a format of a CD or DVD, but credit authenticity must be shown by published credit in the form of album cover or printed program or the like. .
ii) Competition for Mixing --- only open to contestants that are still enrolled in educational institutions. Registered contestants will access recorded audio files (wav files) from the DIFAT web sites (www.DIFAT.com and www.DIFAT.cn) and submit their mixing work product online for the first round of the competition. Contestants must perform mixing ONLY in waves 9.0 version in Cubase, Logic or Protools platforms.

II. THE DENNY AWARDS FOR ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC MUSIC COMPETITIONS
The annual Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology (DIFAT) will always feature a series of international competitions in order to raise awareness of how our music world has been forever impacted by new technologies.

DIFAT’s categories of competition are designed to promote the use of and foster the expertise in electronic music and digitally enhanced musical creations. We endeavor to create an atmosphere of collegial, respectful and fair competition where international caliber juries judge all levels of the competitions in a blinded fashion without knowledge of the competitors’ name, professional/academic standing or institutional affiliation. DIFAT has the exclusive right to appoint any and all members of the jury.

The competitions are open to anyone, regardless of age, nationality and affiliation. Contestants may submit in more than one category, but in all cases, only one submission is allowed for each category.

For all competitions, finalists will be selected from earlier rounds and notified by June 23rd, 2019. These finalists will receive invitations to the Finals, to be held at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology from July 29th to August 3rd, 2019. Please take note that certain categories of competition do NOT require the personal appearance of the contestant. Appearance at the Finals is the responsibility of the Finalist although DIFAT shall issue official letters of invitation for Finalists coming from outside the United States to get a visiting visa from the U.S. Consulate. For Asian Finalists that cannot come to Denver for any reason, provisions will be made to produce a professional video and audio file at a site to be determined in Beijing and such files will be sent to DIFAT to be adjudicated y the judging panel. At the Finals, the scores will be tabulated once the competition is completed and announced on site. The jury’s decision is solely at their discretion and shall not be contested.

At any time before or after the DIFAT competition, if any work submitted is found not to meet the qualifications of the stated rules of the competition, DIFAT shall execute its indisputable authority to disqualify the submitted work or its prize, if awarded.

The Finals at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology (DIFAT)

The Finals of all the categories of the international competitions hosted by the Law Institute will be held during the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology 2019 (July 29th – August 2nd, 2019). Please check websites www.difat.com, www.difat.cn or go to the link at www.du.edu/liat after May 15th, 2019 for finalized competition dates, times and location for the Finals of all competitions at the Festival.

By registering for the competitions at the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology (DIFAT),
the contestant hereby agrees to the following conditions:

1)The DIFAT reserves to choose the Jury at its sole discretion.
2)The decision by the Jury is final and not subject to any changes or negotiations.
3)DIFAT owns the right to publish and perform and broadcast the contestant’s submitted
work of art for any activities related to DIFAT’s events, public relations and marketing.
The contestant will own the rights of commercial exploitation for such works outside of
any use related to DIFAT.
4)Contestant agrees to abide by all rules and regulations of DIFAT whether they are written, published
or announced at the festival.
5)DIFAT hereby declares that all Jury/Juries that are party to the Festival’s competitions
are scoring the contestant in a manner that is totally “blinded”. All contestants/finalists
are presented to the Jury members anonymously without any advance notification as the contestant’s
identity or institutional affiliation or any personal data.
6)All scores shall be announced within 20 minutes after the conclusion of the competition
while all the judges are still in attendance.

I. PRODUCTIONS AT DIFAT 2019
The annual Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology will always feature new and unique theatrical productions that showcase the symbiosis between musical arts and digital technologies. These shows will reveal new forms of creative expression that will result in higher audience satisfaction in theatrical and musical arts.

1) Ms. Butterfly --- a new electro-acoustic music adaptation of Giacomo Puccini’s notable grand opera, Madame Butterfly that will serve as the opening production.

This unique and unprecedented adaptation will combine new electro-acoustic music adaptation, futuristic art direction/costume designs as well as meaningful story changes. The traditional and beloved Puccini opera will be transformed into an emotional and technology-inspired musical drama that becomes relevant, understandable and enjoyable for contemporary audiences.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Throughout history, even though arts is intrinsically in man’s nature, science will always elevate the arts in all its forms. The annual Denver International Festival of Arts and Technology will serve to elevate public awareness of how digital science will forever enhance the arts and contribute to its education and research.

The annual Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology (DIFAT) 2019 will comprise of the following categories:

1) Innovative and unique electro-acoustic musical productions
2) The second annual Denny Awards for electro-acoustic music
3) Festival symposium

Hosted by the Joseph & Loretta Law Institute of Arts and Technology at the University of Denver, the Denver International Festival of Arts & Technology 2019 featuring performances and competitions will be held at the Newman Center for Performing Arts at the University of Denver from July 22nd to August 4th, 2019. Collaborating partners of the Festival includes the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Center for Music and Technology, the College of Arts and Media of the University of Colorado at Denver, Colorado School of Mines and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

All 2019 DIFAT’s events and competitions are designed to promote the use of and foster the expertise in electro-acoustic musical creations. In our Festival’s productions, we feature in an unprecedented manner how technologies can alter and improve musical concerts and theatrical productions. In our Denny Awards competitions, we endeavor to promote international interest in electro-acoustic music by creating in our competitions an atmosphere of collegial, respectful and fair competition where international caliber juries judge all competitions in a blinded fashion without knowledge of the competitors’ name, professional/academic standing or institutional affiliation. In addition, DIFAT will use the competitions as well as our DIFAT symposium to promote the creativity and achievement of all our participants and also showcase the potential of advances of electro-acoustic music.
