2024 came with more opportunities than I could imagine. I was in Colorado, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, and Idaho. In all of those adventures , this is the greatest and most impactful picture I personally took. I was recording this sequence and had to snap a quick picture. This image hit me with so much emotion and feeling. 99% of the world looks at this picture, and they see nothing but a side profile of a face. The thing that I saw at that moment was a guy who had dedicated so much of his blood, sweat, and time into bowhunting. It is who he is down to his core. He had just watched his biggest bull ever take his final breath. His jaw does not clinch in anger, but in total, awe of that animal. The raw emotion and magnitude showed on his face. I knew at that moment that was for real. It can be lonely on the mountain, but one thing is for certain - you belong there, my friend. Thanks for the memory that I will cherish forever.

Celebrating success with family is what’s it’s all about! Rachel had a heart breaking early muzzleloader encounter, where the gun misfired on a stud. The short 8 days to fill her gun tag ticked on by without getting another opportunity. She then made the decision to buy her first archery tag… after experiencing some high and lows of bow hunting she persevered and made a great shot on her first archery buck! (Nothing better, right Rach?) We’re very proud of ya! Can’t wait to put together the footage of this wild ride. 🏹

Have you ever woken up from a dream and immediately tried to fall back asleep because the dream was so good? That’s how Nov 2nd felt to me - a total dream day… one that I envision happening all the time but rarely does. I woke up Saturday morning hoping for lightening to strike, but I didn’t know it would strike twice in one day.

Nov 2nd I found myself perched 25ft up watching the sunrise on my own ground - enjoying every moment of it. I looked to my right and caught a buck cruising the corn field above me. I let him get a little further out there, and then I smacked the horns together - he locomotived his way into the timber, thrashing trees and acting big and bad. A couple grunts later, and he was 22 yards away. A grunt to stop him, and I watched my first ever buck on my farm expire 40 yards away from me.. A dream come true.. The girls found him, and Mack took awesome pics.

We jokingly said we should go try and fill the statewide tag now... One thing about me - when the peddle is down, I keep it down. We rushed to another farm, where there had been a few mature bucks acting goofy with the rut. Mackenzie in tow, we set up Buckey Jr. to try and tempt something into stepping out. We were in at 4:00 pm and at 4:26 a deer we knew all too well was 50 yds away posturing at the decoy. After scrambling to get everything ready- We watched him posture into 24 yds and put on a show- he slowly walked out to 31 and the NAP killzone paired with the Mathews laced him- Mack laid down footage for the ages. Lighting struck twice! Nov 2nd, 2024 will live rent-free in my mind forever. It has been a blessed year. A few more tags to fill and we’ll close out the Herb 2024 dream season! From the depths of my core, there is no Cole without bow hunting. Thank you to everyone - I can’t wait to share more episodes with you all.

This final week of October has been so good to us over the years… and this buck was a long time coming. I’ve waited since 2021 to wrap my bow tag around a mature buck here in Iowa… passing quite a few hopefuls along the way. I’ve had my eye on a few all season and when this guy showed up for the first time the morning of the 24th, I added him to the list. Had no history with him but was clearly a mature buck. Cole had actually snuck in and hung this stand just a few days earlier to hunt for a different deer. We slipped in that evening of the 24th during a thunderstorm 😂 knowing that there was now two shooters in the area. Shortly after the rain let up there was movement in the timber and this guy was with a pile of does and a small buck. Over my shoulder I saw his dark forehead and grey face coming thru the trees and knew it was him. It quickly turned into a circus and I about blew my opportunity, but as fate and luck would have it, he made his way out in front of me. My cam hit the treelimb above me followed by my elbow as I drew 🤦🏼‍♀️ and he bound out to about 42 yards. I settled my pin back on him and let it fly but hit him a bit back. Not to take any chances, we let him lay for the night and called in called in a dog. Axel lead the way and found him dead in the creek within 30 minutes! Had the best tracking crew and thankful to get to spend another fall up in a tree with my sidekick/guide, Cole! These animals sure are fun (and exhausting) to chase!
