Brace yourself music fans (rant following, but I believe it's deserved in this modern sea of s**t we are in) ..sitting here listening to Clandestine (Entombed) for the 1,000th time, enjoying it once again as if it were my first time as a kid in 1991 (yes, I am that old and was there to experience this amazing time!)...
Does anyone else just get literally blown TF away by the bands and people like Tomas Skogsberg and their productions brought back then?!? Listen to ANYTHING they've been involved with from the 1990's (as well as Dan Swano, Ahti Kortelainen, Scott Burns, Harris Johns, Siggi Bemm, etc.) !?
These superior men engineered albums on equipment that would be considered inferior trash by today's "standards", but sound so superior - deep, rich, dynamic, clear, thick, warm, and just plain amazing compared to the plastic garbage that's been put out since then. We're talking 16-24 TOTAL tracks - ON TAPE - at best, with very limited gear, no computers, no stupid plugins, nothing extravagant. Editing? forget it! Maybe a few punch ins or tape splicing - which most of you would not have the talent for (most of you wouldn't know a thing about tape, even cassettes!)
I don't care who you are or how much trendy equipment you own or what studio you have, you're NOTHING compared to these guys! Their pedigree stands alone forever - never to be touched.
Of course - it takes an amazing (*LIVE!) band with amazing musicians to pull it off as well, which is rare these days. I also realize there are exceptions to this, but they are rare, far and few between, and are handicapped being "produced" on modern DAW systems. It all ends up sounding the same, plastic, and boring, am I wrong!?
Mister modern "producer": Hang it up, get a real job, and take care of your pathetic families you've started in spite of it all, you'll never achieve this level - ever. Your families do not appreciate your lazy "rockstar" way of life!
Good intelligent bands can and will produce their own art on their own budget and time and do not need you or your pathetic studio. You're trying to earn a living on empty dreams and on an era that's long gone. 😥 sad but true.
Take my advise: I realized and understood this around 2016 after being in several successful bands, touring, and owning and operating The Ensomberoom V3 for about 20 years. I was on the verge of investing a lot of money and time in the ultimate "analog" true old school recording studio, but then understood the cold hard fact that no matter what you have, the bands are not the same. The true passion and fire is mostly burned out and gone.
I promptly retired and moved on with my life, even though I produced some amazing albums and was honored to be a part of those!. *(you won't, and many of you will try to argue with me)
Junior "engineers": Stop trying. Your trendy studio full of knock off clone equipment isn't s**t. There's no hope for you or for most music anymore.
Don't be a who-wa!
Listen to and enjoy the classicks, but stop copying it! I wish all the HM-2 pedals on earth would self destruct. your riffs SUCK!
It's over, until the next big thing surfaces (which I have my doubts will).
HAH!
To quote the greats long gone that you will never be *(RIP LG):
"I have embraced the truth
Beyond lies where honesty reigns
I thought I gave my life
But back I was only given pain"
