From the glory days of Hollywood!
I could write a book on the historical tentacles of this piece, but I I’ll begin with what touches my heart.
This Medallion is from the estate of MGM executive Mr. Leslie Petersen.
Mr. Petersen, “Les”, was born and raised in San Jose, Ca. From a family of humble means, he dropped out of high school and took a job picking peaches and ushering at the local theater to help out.
Leslie began promoting the movies that arrived by doing everything from having the local beauties sitting on the Fox Theater roof to hanging street banners, creating parades and decorating department store window displays.
To give perspective, the first feature length film was in 1927. Mr.Petersen was a pioneer in the marketing of movies!
When MGM's Publicity Head Howard Strickling made a trip to San Jose he hand picked Leslie to be Assistant head of publicity. He was a mere 22 years old.
"Les" played a pivotal role in guiding the careers of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland while working closely with Elizebeth Taylor, Clark Gable, Norma Shearer, Irving Thalberg, Bing Crosby, etc. His amazing job description also included World premiers such as the opening of "Gone with the Wind" in Atlanta, the secret wedding of Mickey Rooney and Ava Gardner and other discreet happenings.
Leslie Petersen spent the next 25 years with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
By the early 1950’s he became the studio’s first Executive in charge of television.
Founded in Chicago in 1911, Photoplay Magazine was the first movie fan publication.
The "Photoplay Magazine Medal of Honor Awards" began in 1921 (predating the Oscars by ten years). The magazine took out a full page add in the May issue including a ballot at the bottom of the page.Yes.The winners were chosen by movie fans and loyal readers!
This magnificent Medallion was
Struck by none other than the illustrious and incomparable Tiffany &Company.
A phenomenal piece in every way.
