At Christmastime, Jack Frost nipping at your nose sounds cute. When you are shoveling snow in January, you worry about meeting his ugly cousin, frostbite. While hypothermia, the lowering of core body temperature, is deadly, frostbite---freezing of the skin and underlying tissues--- can cause permanent tissue damage, as well as lead to amputation and disability. The Mayo Clinic reports there are three stages of frostbite. Local support for "To Your Health" is provided by EBO MD.

Otto Widmann is unknown to the average Missourian but is an icon to those who study Missouri birds. Born in 1841 in Baden, Germany, he emigrated to St. Louis in 1867, where he worked as a pharmacist. He began documenting the local bird life along the Mississippi River, combing the deep woods that existed in that day along the River des Pere.

Discover nature this week with Missouri’s ‘sounds of winter’. Grab your coat, scarf and gloves and get outside to take in the true sounds of the season. We often think of winter as a quiet time in nature. Chilling winds suppress any desire to wander outside, but the sounds of winter are waiting to be heard -- if you choose to brave the cold.
