Hey my music enthusiast and mix engineers out there! I was sitting in my studio working on a mix the other day for a southern gospel artist and as always i like to reference other mix engineers mixes and i have to say there are some engineers pushing the envelope on Southern Gospel mixing and it has made me push myself to break the old model of SG mixing. Todays artists are looking for huge sounding records and as a mix engineer we can't be complacent in our craft. Don't be afraid of big drums and big bottom on a record, embrace it, craft it and push it. I find if I get the drums to where I feel they are on the edge, I go about 3 db more. Don't get me wrong I loved the 80s and 90s mixes but the drums and bass were mixed back and todays artists do not want that. So with all this said I just wanted to share that I love what I do and I do not ever want to be hard nosed about how a record should be done! I Love the way music keeps growing from decade to decade!
