Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. The story below is remarkable, not only because 7 siblings survived the Holocaust together but because the next generation is creating a film to honor all victims of genocide and displacement. It's worth reading the entire article and linking to the film:

HandoutGinger Lane was at home with her mother in their Berlin apartment in the spring of 1943 when the Gestapo arrived. She doesn’t remember now, 80 years on, why exactly she hid behind a door as the two men led her mother—a Jewish woman born in Hungary—out of their home. But she does remembe...

Buried beneath the snickers bars, witches' hats, and lightsabers lies the true meaning of October 31. In traditional earth-based practices, it is the day when the veil between this world and the spirit world thins, and we listen for and pay tribute to, the wisdom of our ancestors before the world plunges into darkness ( in the Northern hemisphere) and we spend time in reflection before spring comes again. In Mythology, this is represented by the story of Persephone, who must spend 6 months below the earth while her mother weeps. In the Christian tradition, All Saint's Day ( November 1) is celebrated on November 1, and the roll of the "saints" who have left this life in the previous 12 months is read.

As storytellers and keepers of the light of generations, we are asked to think deeply about this time of year. I've included a moving post from Murphy Barney, a Vermont native who focuses on communicating with her ancestors. May we remember the Wise Ones who passed before us:

What we can learn from conversing with our ancestors and how to carry on their wisdom.

Boston College has developed a website that tracks different ethnic groups and immigration patterns to our fair city. Utterly fascinating. Perhaps you live in the area or have relatives who immigrated to Boston.
It would be interesting to see what other cities have pulled this kind of data together in one place.

Global Boston is a digital project chronicling the history of immigration to greater Boston since the early nineteenth century. Examining different time periods and ethnic groups, the site features capsule histories, photographs, maps, documents, and oral histories chronicling the history of a city....

Dame Angela Lansbury's career in entertainment was as long-lived and as varied as they come. She was a star during Hollywood's Golden Age. She was a Broadway icon. She appeared on living room TV sets as the beloved Jessica Fletcher in "Murder, She Wrote" for 12 seasons. She somehow wrenched hearts even as a singing teapot in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast."

It's been nearly 80 years since her first film credit in "Gaslight," which was added to the National Film Registry in 2019, but audiences never tired of the elegance and power of her performances. May she rest in peace.
