When it comes to shooting sports, Oxford has a long history of not only taking part, but of winning. The teams and competition may have seen some changes over the years. But the commitment of the shooters, organizers, sponsors and coaches has remained.

The Oxford Gun Club has been in existence for over 100 years. The club, new in 1922 started strong. The December 14, 1922 Oxford Standard noticed the group with the words “The latest fad to spring into existence is the organization of the Nimrods into a Gun Club with a present membership of 45”. Take note that the definition of the term “nimrod” is “a skillful hunter”.

The Oxford Jaycees took part in a first of its kind shoot in 1961 put on by the Beatrice Junior Chamber of Commerce. The team “walked off with most of the loot,” according to the news article by Al Riddington of the Daily Sun. The Oxford Jaycees team of Lloyd Johnson, Jinx Jones, Jim Frear, Steve Tanner and LeRoy Johnson won the team trophy. Winning their events were Lloyd Johnson in the 16-yard event and Jinx Jones, handicap. “We came to win and we did,” commented Frear, president of the Oxford chapter. More on this history👇🏻🗞️

The Eustis Ag Society installed new arena lights in preparation for the 108th Annual Eustis Fair & Corn
Show on August 4-10.

The Eustis Ag Society has been planning to install new lights for about 12 months. Kevin and Heath Weichel hung, wired in, and placed new LED lights around the arena. Evans Construction and Nebraska Crane donated and permitted use of a man lift to help the installment process.

This was a big project that required lots of work, time, and effort. Eustis Ag Society board member Cari Rohr spoke on the need for the new lights, “We figured out the old lights were from the 1980s... glass was cracked and lights were out... last year when it rained one of the lights fell down, and we knew it was time."

Cambridge's palate has expanded with the opening of a new restaurant in town: Los Abuelos. The Mexican restaurant sits where the Corner Cafe used to be, and it opened Tuesday, July 9.

The restaurant is run by the same family that operates Tequila's in McCook. Zuleyma Garcia is the manager of the two locations and has been since Tequila's opened about fourteen years ago.

Zuleyma's hometown is Degollado, a small town in Jalisco, Mexico. Zuleyma came to America when she was 15 years old, banking on success in the 'land of opportunity'. Zuleyma came to the States with her aunt and started working in restaurants. Zuleyma's daughter, Gabriela Hernandez, spoke more on her mom's restaurant management journey in last week’s edition👇🏻

Arapahoe-Holbrook considering girl’s wrestling co-op program👇🏻🤼‍♀️

During the Arapahoe School Board meeting on July 8, three students and a parent discussed the potential of the district joining with another area district to form a cooperative girl’s wrestling program.

According to Supt. Bob Drews, who has been in contact with other area schools, with two to four girls interested in wrestling during the upcoming year, the district is not able to start its own program but the possibility of joining with another district is a likely option.

The board is expected to act at the August meeting regarding the co-op program. October 1 is the deadline for school districts to sign up with the NSA for winter sports activities.

Cambridge Board of Education approves multiple policies at monthly meeting👇🏻

Discussion was then held about the cell phone use policy. A motion was made to approve the policy. The motion passed.

Principal Mike Nanfito spoke about updates to the student handbook including closed campus and students not bringing in outside food and drink to school. He highly recommended students take advantage of the food program provided at Cambridge both for breakfast and for lunch or bringing packed lunches from home.

Nanfito also wants to remind parents that they need to communicate with the main office any time a student is leaving campus and that students should bring a note back from appointments if possible.

Other changes included students keeping backpacks and gym bags in their lockers during the day. This will help with school safety as well as eliminate outside food and drinks and other items being carried with them. He also spoke about student usage of the phone in the main office during the school day.
