WCAS Radio

WCAS Radio WCAS Radio - 740 kHz From sometime in the early 1970s to May of 1981, there existed a remarkable little radio station in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

It had only 250 watts of power; it was AM; and it had to sign off the air at sunset. By those measures, it was the least among the dozens of Boston-area radio stations. Yet, many people recall it fondly to this day.

Hail and farewell, John Prine. I remember hearing "Angel From Montgomery" for the first time while listening to WCAS sometime in 1975. It was Bonnie Kolok's version. I was in my car and got to my destination while it was playing. I just sat in the parking lot listening. Transfixed.

"Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go"

From the mailbag:
A question for you . When the station went off the air at night was the last song played "Till the morning Comes" by Neil Young? If so, then I LOVED the station it had a great playlist and was way ahead of its time.

Just heard that Larry Miller passed away. He worked at WCAS Radio and was the last Program Director, during which time we had the best ratings ever. He had the courage of his convictions. He once posted on the wall a list of all the stations he had been fired from or quit. We were very fortunate to have had someone of his caliber on the air. You will find some of his posts on this page.

Because "you asked for it", as they used to say on that old TV program. Robin Lane before the Chartbusters, on WCAS Live At Passim, Jan 23, 1977. This is indeed a great song, with a hook that I've never forgotten.

A big welcome to Frank Dudgeon, one of the familiar on-air voices at WCAS from the early days of the folk/eclectic format. Check the "posts to page" below for his note. Photo by Alan Mandel.

Hi to all who worked at the AMAZING WCAS.

I was an on air DJ at WRKO from '74 through '78...and used to love listening to WCAS. What a nice escape from the USUAL stuff on AM radio back in the day. You guys had a big part in shaping who I was...and what I listened to back then....THANKS SO MUCH !!!

The Acoustic Outpost is my internet radio station, now a little over 4 years old, and it is very much in the tradition of WCAS. Live365 featured it in their blog and monthly newsletter, including an interview with me. Of course, I mentioned WCAS in the interview.
