On the morning of Feb. 20 another powerful earthquake struck Turkey’s southern province of Hatay. The 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck in the same region as the previous earthquake from two weeks ago. Three people have been reported dead from this most recent earthquake and more than 200 injured.

On Feb. 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake ravaged the Middle East, specifically Turkey and Syria, killing more than 44,000 people, thousands missing and millions of people without a home in its wake. Weeks after the natural disaster took place, rescue teams are still struggling to uncover victims and get them to safety.

For those seeking to donate to relief efforts, you can visit UNICEF, Turkish Red Crescent, Turkey Mozaik Foundation, and Turkish Philanthropy Funds. These groups have launched emergency funds to respond to the situation in Turkey and Syria, which provide medical services and essentials such as food, water, and sanitation services.

On Oct. 31, 2022, a former NASA rocket scientist and tech executive, Sylvia Acevedo, came to CI to be interviewed by the Dean of the Martin V. Smith School of Business and Economics (MVS School), Susan Andrzejewski, Ph.D. as part of the MVS School guest speaker series.

Acevedo talked about her experiences as a NASA rocket scientist at the Jet Propulsion Lab, working on the Parker Solar Probe and Voyager 2. She also talked about her experience as the CEO of Girl Scouts, creating hundreds of new STEM-focused badges; a White House commissioner, paving the way for the Early Childhood Dual Language Education Policy; executive at tech firms like Apple and Dell; and author of “Path to the Stars: My Journey from Girl Scout to Rocket Scientist.”

She also drew from her childhood experiences, living in poverty and coming from a Spanish-speaking household. Her variety of life experiences is reflected in the advice she gave to CI students.

For students who are entering spaces as “firsts” -- including first-generation students and women in predominantly male fields -- Acevedo said, “The first person you have to convince you can do something is yourself.” And from her experience selling Girl Scout cookies, she emphasized learning how to create opportunity: “What’s your goal? What’s your dream? And then, figure out the steps needed to get there, and when you run into trouble, ask for help. That was so pivotal for me.”

Attending one of the guest speaker events could be that pivotal moment that changes the trajectory of your life. Visit to stay updated on the guest speaker series and other events to connect with others and gain unique perspectives.
