Finding a tight-knit trio of stars isn’t what astronomers expected to see while sifting through TESS data.

Astronomers and citizen scientists teamed up with artificial intelligence to filter through enormous sets of starlight data from our TESS observatory to identify patterns of eclipses in other star systems. That is how TIC 290061484 was found!

In the system, twin stars were seen orbiting one another every 1.8 days, and a third star circles the pair every 25 days, the fastest-know period for this type of system. Scientists saw these as “strobe lights” in TESS’s data.

An International Space Station astronaut captured this dazzling view of northwestern Europe the night of Jan. 19. 🧑‍🚀 📷

The photo was taken at an oblique angle and includes Earth’s horizon—also known as Earth’s limb—near the top of the image. The faint green light in the limb could be a hint of aurora borealis at higher latitudes. Or, it could be airglow, a type of chemiluminescence—the emission of light from chemical interactions between oxygen, nitrogen, and other molecules in the upper atmosphere.

Nighttime views of Earth provide researchers with a unique perspective on human activities around the planet. They are used to estimate the extent of urban areas and people’s access to electricity.
