An International Space Station astronaut captured this dazzling view of northwestern Europe the night of Jan. 19. 🧑‍🚀 📷

The photo was taken at an oblique angle and includes Earth’s horizon—also known as Earth’s limb—near the top of the image. The faint green light in the limb could be a hint of aurora borealis at higher latitudes. Or, it could be airglow, a type of chemiluminescence—the emission of light from chemical interactions between oxygen, nitrogen, and other molecules in the upper atmosphere.

Nighttime views of Earth provide researchers with a unique perspective on human activities around the planet. They are used to estimate the extent of urban areas and people’s access to electricity. Astronomers used the unique capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope to capture a largely unseen population of very small asteroids in their tracks. The treasure hunt required perusing 37,000 Hubble images. The payoff? Finding 1,701 asteroid trails. About 400 of these unknown asteroids are smaller than a half mile (0.8 kilometer) in size.

Asteroids appear as curved trails in Hubble images. The trails are due to parallax because Hubble is not stationary, but orbiting Earth. This gives the illusion that faint asteroids are streaking along curved trajectories.
