📖 I’d Rather Be Reading

Are all my American friends enjoying the extra hour of sleep with the end of daylight savings time? I know I did!

It’s a cool and rainy fall day here in northern Illinois and I’ve got my mocha latte in my Ravenclaw mug while planning out Bookstagram posts for the week.

I’ve been lax on planning recently and am trying to get my organization back on track. Executive function is a constant struggle for me as a neurodivergent adult and the Sunday planning is an essential part of getting my week off to a good start in all areas of my life. But…I’d rather be reading!

Now that those hot Chicago Grizzlies Football players from The Den have all found their HEA, three single NHL players have taken over the condos, renamed it The Nest, and are closer than they think to meeting their soul mates in a new hockey romance series by Piper Rayne.

Mr. Heartbreaker features Rowan, the hot shot center for the Chicago Falcons, and Kyleigh, the little sister of Rowan’s college best friend/teammate. When the two hookup at a wedding reception, it quickly becomes all sorts of complicated when Kyleigh gives him a fake name, one night isn’t enough, and her brother is traded home to the Falcons. Add in all the banter, sneaking around, spicy goodness, and family drama that will leave you spinning, and this book is one you have to read!

Rowan is book boyfriend perfection and while I didn’t always agree with Kyleigh’s choices at the time, the resulting character growth made it worth it to me. The secondary characters were so fun and engaging and I’m looking forward to seeing how the other guys get their HEAs too!

Listening to the audiobook edition made me love this story even more! With performances by Sean Masters, Erin Mallon, Connor Crais, JF Harding, Troy Duran, Teddy Hamilton, and CJ Bloom, it was like being part of the story. If you have the opportunity to listen to this on audio, I highly recommend it!

🎮 Audiobook Review 🎮

Thank you & for the ALC. .loves.books and I first heard about this audiobook release by when we were at Steamy Lit Con in August. I’m so glad we were able to do a buddy listen!

I’m a huge fan of a well written novella, and Ali Hazelwood delivered with Two Can Play!

When two rival design teams must come together at a team building retreat to prove that they can work together, it’s a less than ideal situation. A workplace romance with a close proximity twist, this audiobook was the perfect blend of character development, plot, and spice.

I immediately connected with Viola’s character and was curious about what could have caused Jesse to treat her the way he has over the past six years. The secondary characters were fun, engaging, and with one that I just loved to hate, it made for a fun cast at the retreat! Mike and Otto presented an entertaining secondary romantic storyline with all the pining making me root for a second chance for them.

While I don’t typically enjoy a misunderstanding trope, in this case it worked for me. There’s no third act breakup, and once the truth comes out, Jesse and Viola are able see the past through the lens of the new information and communicate.

I enjoyed the performance by Kelsey Navarro Foster, who brought the story to life with emotion and her unique voicing of the characters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5 Stars

I loved everything about this book from the characters, a quick moving plot, and the Christmas themed team challenges at the ski lodge, The secondary characters added so much to this story and the chosen family aspect of the book made it even better. The setting was absolutely magical! My family doesn’t ski, but would absolutely love to experience a resort like the one in this book!

🧡 ARC Review

Deja Brew was my most anticipated witchy read this fall and I was thrilled to receive an advance copy from Available TOMORROW 10/1

I’m not usually a fan of a time loop trope a la Groundhog’s Day, but never say never! Celestine Martin’s use of the trope to give Sirena a second chance to change her disastrous October via a wish tea was perfection!

Sirena and Gus were engaging characters, both caught between their past and present, their familial responsibilities, and what the future holds for them. Sirena’s kitchen magic has been on the fritz with some disastrous results. She has focused her energy on her role in the Caraway family and lost the joy and fun in life. Being caught up in the daily grind of responsibility while yearning for a sense of satisfaction in her career and life as a whole, I found myself identifying with Sirena’s character and journey in so many ways. Her decision to try to recapture fun and joy in her life inspires me to do the same.

The Caraway girls are a loving and supportive as ever. Sirena and Gus were absolutely perfect together! I loved how Gus challenged her when she needed it, Sirena gave Gus the understanding and support he needed at just the right times, and the time slip hookup! Wow!

This book was a solid 4 stars for me. I loved everything about it until the end of the time loop, but once time returned to “normal” the book read slow to me. I understand why the story needed to get to New Year’s Eve to finish off the story lines, and perhaps on a reread, I would feel differently. It is still a highly recommend, do not miss witchy read!

I’m looking forward to discussing Deja Brew with my reading buddy soon!

My Thoughts:

Everyone wants to feel special on their birthday and all Turkey wishes for is a pizza party. With help from his farmyard friends, Turkey is at it again with his almost perfect costumes as he attempts to determine what is going on in the back yard.

Another entertaining read in the Turkey Trouble series by Wendi Silvano! Kids of all ages can relate to Turkey’s excitement about his birthday and curiosity about what is going on in the farmer’s backyard. With colorful illustrations and creative costumes, Turkey and his friends show that sometimes you just have to wait to find out what surprises are in store.

This was the perfect book to read to my son as his 6th birthday approaches next week. He loves the language repetition in this book series and I enjoy the play on words that he is too young to pick up on quite yet. I purchased a print copy from my local bookseller as this is one I just have to add to our family library!

I loved this book even more than Icing It, which I didn’t think would be possible! With a grumpy goalie, a British billionaire, a smoking hot firefighter, and a sassy curvy girl hot mess of an FMC, it all adds up to poly perfection!

Knot Her Fight is the third book in the MVP: Most Valuable Pack series and features Serena, a scared and broken omega with a traumatic past she has just escaped from. Knot Her Fight includes an established pack of alphas in the Thorne pack; two of them being professional athletes. I was curious how the author would make this third book unique while still giving the series a feeling of cohesion and continuity. In the first half of the book, the vibe of Knot Her Fight is darker than the previous books and it gives this book a totally different feel. Ari Wright nailed it!

Serena is not the only character dealing with trauma in this book. Avery is my favorite of the pack alphas. An MMA fighter, loner, and “roiling volcano of rage,” whose alpha instincts push him to fight everyone and question why he is even part of the pack. When this violent broken alpha falls to his knees, bowing to his omega, when he first encounters Serena... it was everything!

Spencer is a complex character with hidden depths and a traumatic past. The steamy scenes between Serena and the touch averse, stern alpha have all the dominant teacher student vibes. Of course the pack also needs a softer alpha and NFL player Jonah fits perfectly with his cinnamon roll personality. Tristan is the pack alpha, a senator devoted to improving the lives of omegas. He holds the weight of the pack on his shoulders and himself to impossibly high standards.

The character development as Serena and her four alphas heal, grow, and ultimately bond made for an authentic and engaging story. The author also surprised me with a plot twist I did not see coming!

This is a must read for fans of omegaverse romance!

Sassy, snarky, and independent, the Merriweather women are a multi-generational family of witches living without access to their magic. Since becoming an adult, Delia doesn’t believe in magic exists beyond the magical warm feelings of happiness and nostalgia she has about her childhood, yet sees no harm in participating in the rituals that are so important to her grandmother and great-aunts. It makes them happy, so what’s the harm? The older generation of Merriweather witches had me laughing out loud from the first chapter!

Born on a Blue Moon, Delia’s family believes she is the witch chosen to break the hex as the “blue witch”. Max comes from a magical family devoted to logic; all emotions are seen as weakness. It was one of his ancestors who hexed the Merriweather witches and following the death of his uncle, it is now Max’s job to keep an eye on Delia to be sure the hex remains in place. Despite his logical bent and locked down emotions, he can’t help but fall for her.

The secondary characters really made the book stand out for me. Max’s brother, Delia’s grandmother and great-aunts, and Nikki, Max’s imp familiar. who adds his own brand of chaos, humor, and assistance in both his human and cat form. The hot tub scene was just the best! IYKYK!
