Big News for Dog Owners in Maine and Canada
December 16, 2024
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) will rewrite the rules about bringing dogs into the United States, especially for people traveling from Canada. These changes are a big win for dog owners in Maine, border communities, and events like the Can-Am Crown International Dog Sled Race.
Right now, temporary rules will stay in place until the new ones are ready.
Senator Susan Collins worked hard to get the CDC to rethink its rules. Earlier this year, the CDC created strict rules that made it hard for people to travel with their dogs, even from rabies-free countries like Canada. Senator Collins and others pushed back, saying the rules were unfair to dog owners and border communities.
Because of their feedback, the CDC:
1. Stopped the strict rules for dogs coming from rabies-free places like Canada.
2. Simplified the process to just one form.
What this means for dog owners traveling from Canada:
• You only need to fill out a form called the CDC Dog Import Form.
• You can fill it out on the day of travel.
• You can show the form as a printout or on your phone.
• The form is good for 6 months and can be used for multiple trips.
The CDC will still require dogs to:
• Be at least 6 months old.
• Have a microchip.
These changes will make travel easier for people who cross the border for events like sled dog races or dog shows. The CDC plans to write new rules, and people will have the chance to share their ideas.
Senator Collins promises to keep working to make sure the rules are fair for dog owners and communities near the border.
