Saturday Night Live is currently celebrating its 50th season and has some special events scheduled in early 2025 in recognition of the big anniversary. NBC announced on Thursday (December 19) that Questlove is directing an upcoming three-hour documentary highlighting the musical guests and song-filled sketches featured on the show over the years titled, Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music. It will premiere on NBC on January 27 at 8 p.m. ET, and stream the next day on Peacock. According to the network, the special will “feature untold stories behind the culture-defining, groundbreaking and newsmaking musical performances, sketches and cameos of the past 50 years.”

“Everyone knows the most famous SNL appearances, whether it’s Elvis Costello, Prince or the Beastie Boys, but they’re the tip of a huge iceberg,” Questlove said in a statement. “The process of going back through the incredible archival footage was like being in a time machine. I’m so happy I went on the trip and now get to share it with everyone.”

Saturday Night Live is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the festivities continue with a brand new music-focused documentary.

Nirvana’s Nevermind continues to set records, 33 years after its initial release. The trailblazing 1991 album has just become only the ninth release in music history to spend 700 weeks on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Five of those nine records are Greatest Hits compilations, which makes Nevermind one of only four studio albums to reach that prestigious milestone, joining Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (990 weeks), Metallica’s “Black Album” (767 weeks), and Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans (706 weeks). The Greatest Hits collections that have reached the milestone are from Bob Marley and the Wailers (865 weeks), Journey (835 weeks), Creedence Clearwater Revival (724 weeks), Eminem (714 weeks), and Guns N’ Roses (704 weeks). Nirvana’s sophomore release currently sits at No. 120 on the current Billboard 200, which marks its historic 700th non-consecutive overall week on the albums chart. In addition to this achievement, Nevermind also just received 13x-platinum certification from the RIAA, recognizing 13 million equivalent sales of the record in the US.

Nirvana's Nevermind has become only the ninth release to spend 700 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, and only the fourth studio LP to achieve that milestone.

Elton John revealed on ‘The Late Show’ that he hated his birth name, Reginald Dwight, describing it as “a s*** name.” He explained that it was chosen after a family argument, and despite the name’s connection to Regina (meaning “queen”), he was eager to change it.

Elton John says he 'hated' being named Reginald Dwight, but jokes that his parents were 'spot on' since it means 'Queen.'

A new study conducted by the tattoo shop LLTattoo in Switzerland has found that Pink Floyd has inspired the most rock-band tattoos, followed by Guns ‘N Roses and Rammstein. The study was conducted by examining search volume data from Google Keyword Planner. Pink Floyd came out in first place with over 13,000 monthly searches worldwide, while Guns N’ Roses came in second with 10,600 searches, and German industrial metal band Rammstein were third with 10,500 searches. “It’s very interesting to see which rock bands inspire the most tattoo pieces around the world,” Mentor Dedaj of LLTattoo said of the study. “Rock music and ink are seemingly inseparable, and tats are almost obligatory to big rock heads.” The rest of the Top 10 includes (in order): Metallica, Nirvana, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Twenty One Pilots, Iron Maiden, and Tool.

A study by LLTattoo discovered that Pink Floyd are the most popular and searched-for rock band tattoo, followed by Guns N' Roses and Rammstein.

The top of the Billboard chart has been dominated by pop, country, and hip-hop throughout 2024 and beyond. You have to dig deep on Billboard’s year-end best-selling albums list to find the first rock record, and when you do it’s a classic album released 47 years ago. Fleetwood Mac’s 21x-platinum 1977 album, Rumours, is the highest-charting rock record of 2024, coming in at No. 34 on Billboard’s year-end list of the top-selling records of the last 12 months. Only 29 of the Top 200 albums on Billboard’s 2024 year-end chart were from rock acts, and none of them were released this year. All but five of those 29 best-selling rock records were greatest hits collections. Besides Rumours, the only non-compilation rock albums to make the chart were Nirvana‘s Nevermind at No. 93, AC/DC‘s Back in Black at No. 162, Linkin Park‘s Hybrid Theory at No. 180, and Sublime‘s self-titled 1996 album at No. 197.

Billboard announced the top-selling rock albums of 2024 in December 2024.

Music documentaries are having a moment. In the last month, talking heads (as opposed to the Talking Heads) have been philosophizing about the power of "yacht rock" on Max while Disney+ has released yet another film about the Beatles (produced by Martin Scorsese no less). A great music doc can reveal the stories behind how the music we love was made while placing it into a larger cultural context. But which documentaries reach the top of the charts?

In a recent interview with Times Radio, U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. discussed his recent diagnosis with dyscalculia for the very first time. Dyscalculia is a learning disability often referred to as “math dyslexia,” which makes it difficult to comprehend basic concepts in arithmetic. This learning disability has severely impacted Mullen Jr.’s ability to read music over the course of his legendary career. “I’ve always known that there’s something not particularly right with the way that I deal with numbers,” Mullen Jr. admits. “I’m numerically challenged. So I can’t count [and] I can’t add.” U2 fans have long noted the “pained” look on Mullen Jr.’s face as he plays drums, and it turns out there’s a good reason for those facial expressions. “I am pained because I’m trying to count the bars,” he shared. “I had to find ways of doing this — and counting bars is like climbing Everest.”

U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. has opened up about having dyscalculia, a learning disability that impacts his ability to read music.

As seemingly everyone is sharing their thoughts about the mysterious lights seen in the skies in New Jersey recently, Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge weighed in with his theories about the peculiar incidents. In an Instagram post on Saturday (December 14), DeLonge revealed that he believes advanced drones are causing the skies to be lit up over the last few weeks, while also expressing distrust of US agencies to tell the truth to the American people. “The drones that are being discussed can hover for six hours, and then disappear once they are spotted,” DeLonge wrote. “This is why it’s been hard to get facts from any US Agency.” DeLonge has spent years researching UFOs, and compared the current sightings to UFO reports from the 1960s. DeLonge believes that in both incidents, “There’s a strong possibility that these drones are ‘mimicking’ other aircraft” in order to “get us to notice them without a major freak out? Who knows… but well, we are noticing nonetheless.”

Blink-182 guitarist and UFO expert Tom DeLonge is offering his thoughts on the mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey.
