Last night at The Venetian Soda Lounge, magic unfolded in a celebration of music, talent, and passion that will resonate with us for a long time. As we wrapped up our Emerging Songwriter Competition, I stood in awe of the extraordinary talent that graced our stage. The atmosphere was electric, filled with energy, leaving every seat occupied and every heart touched. The house was completely packed!

I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who was part of this unforgettable evening. To our dedicated sponsor, , whose support was pivotal with their generous offer of recording time. To my fellow judges, Chris Fransworth from Seven Days and Ben Collette from Tank, thank you for your insights and dedication to discovering new talent. And to , our incredible host and organizer, whose efforts made this event possible, we owe you a world of thanks. In honor of your commitment, we are thrilled to announce that every third Tuesday in March at the lounge will now be celebrated as David Karl Roberts Day, inviting David and open mic participants to share their music and express our collective gratitude as a special kind of open mic where David is the guest of honor. I’ll run to board for you sir.

Congratulations to our winners, , , and Julia Randall, whose performances were nothing short of inspiring. Your music moved us deeply, and we are excited to see where your talents will take you. And to all our participants, remember, as wisely noted, the results do not define you as musicians. Your talent shines brightly, and we encourage you never to give up.

This event was not just a competition; it was a testament to the unifying power of music and talent you all have to share. To everyone who attended, participated, and supported, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your enthusiasm made this event a remarkable success. Let’s continue to support and uplift each other in the journey of music. Until next time, keep sharing your gift with the world.

Cheers!,
JB

We love working with Music-COMP and all the young composers! Tune into Vermont Public this week to hear one of our recordings.

Tune in to Vermont Public Classical this week to hear student composer, Dylan Mauro (Harwood Union HS grade 12) introduce his piece "Cambio de Tango".
This piece premiered during last spring's Opus 37 concert and was recorded by Tank Recording Studio and LCATV.

Dylan, a cellist with the VYO, pulled from his musical experiences with the orchestra as well as the backbeats of reggaeton to create this new work. He has composed in the past on his own and at school, but this was his first mentorship through Music-COMP.

You can hear our monthly Student Composer Showcase here: https://www.vermontpublic.org/show/classical-music-with-james-stewart/2023-10-27/student-composer-showcase-dylan-mauro

Or tune in to listen on the radio:
Monday, 10/30 @ 5:30pm
Wednesday, 11/1 @ 10am
Friday, 11/3 @ 8:30am

Many thanks to: Vermont Public Tank Recording Studio LCATV

Burlington eight-piece soul band, High Summer, are back with a trio of new singles from their pending full-length album due later this year.

Mixed and mastered by Ben Collette at Tank Recording Studio, the three tracks were recorded by keyboardist Andric Severance at his home studio over the past year.

"The Rain That Falls," "Ones and Onlies" and "Let Go” mark the band’s first proper releases and showcase lead vocalist Miriam Bernado with powerful horns interweaving with guitar and keys over an infectious groove of drums and percussion.

To celebrate the new releases, the band is playing a series of shows around the state, beginning on Saturday, March 18, at Winooski's Four Quarters Brewing

The three singles are available now to stream on the band’s website and on all major streaming platforms!

Vermont musician, composer and bandleader Michael Chorney’s newest project, a seven-piece psychedelic jazz-rock collective called Freeway Clyde, has released their first album “Sunflower."

The band developed their method playing live performances. After a residency at Burlington’s Radio Bean, they convened for Sunday meetings at the Tank Studio. Recorded live with no overdubs and no headphones, the sessions capture Clyde at its finest. Non-narrative instrumentals that are as emotionally evocative as lyrical song, yet invite the listener to their own conclusions. Unique, cinematic and with a surfeit of spirit, Freeway Clyde goes somewhere and takes the listeners along.

The electric, omni-genre, seven-piece ensemble creates something fresh — soundtracks for films that have never been made. Together they take poignant folk-rooted themes into a universe of collective improvisation and infinite soundscapes. Vintage synthesizers, electric strings, horns, viola and deep rhythm combine for a timeless sound, from velvet to furious.

Recorded, engineered and mastered by Ben Collette at Tank Recording Studio, Burlington Vermont
Mixed by Taylor Haskins, with MC and Willverine at Recombinant Sound, Westport New York
Produced by Michael Chorney
Cover art by Jeremy Frederick
Recorded live in the room, no overdubs, no headphones in July 2022

Michael Chorney is a musician from Lincoln Vermont. He has worked as a composer, bandleader, librarian, orchestrator, assembly line worker, Tony award winner, arranger, janitor, dance accompanist, carpenter, engineer, house painter, teacher and sideman. His work spans genres, from avant-garde prepared guitar pieces to arrangements of Paul Bowles, Kurt Weill and Sun Ra. A Tony Award-winning composer and arranger, Michael Chorney is one of Vermont’s most prolific and collaborative artists. After working for years on the score for the Broadway hit, Hadestown (winner of eight Tony Awards in 2019), he longed to develop a collective, ensemble approach to music making. He found it back in Vermont and put together a group of the region's most intuitive players. Freeway Clyde took off.

Led by composer/trumpeter Brian Boyes, The Saturn People's Sound Collective consists of "20 wonderful humans who also happen to be some of Vermont’s best musicians.” says Boyes, “And the Saturn sound lies at the intersections of creative big band music, postmodern rock and a healthy dose of outer space. After 10 years of writing and leading this crew, it was time for us to make an album. But not just any album. We decided to put on two live shows for a studio audience on Aug 18 and 19 at the hauntingly beautiful Tank Studio in Burlington, Vermont.”

With forty audience members attending and listening along with wireless headphones to the live studio mix, Saturn People’s Sound Collective performed two concerts that were recorded and ultimately edited and mixed to create a unique “live album”. Across the two nights of shows, Boyes and the twenty musicians of the Saturn People’s Sound Collective explored an alchemy of timbre and long-form composition. While consistently demonstrating a unique knack of creating exciting and challenging music that isn’t a challenge to listen to. Indeed, there is a joyful and honest accessibility to their music that carries one from the quietest and darkest corners to raucous outer space sing-alongs.

The album is available now at:

Earlier this year we welcomed local artist Eva Rose King to record her first studio album “On The Other Side”. As the songs took shape we reached out to some of our local contacts to expand upon the arrangements of guitar, viola and voice. Drummer Geza Carr, bassist Rob Morse, pedal steel guitarist Brett Lanier and pianist Leon Campos lent their talents to the twelve song debut album, which Seven Days VT called "an early contender for the year's best.” Congrats Eva!

Seattle, WA based guitarist/composer Ari Joshua has released his first single from sessions here at TRS this past winter.
"Father Time" was composed and recorded at Tank Recording Studio in Burlington, VT back in February 2021 with Soule Monde (Ray Paczkowski & Russ Lawton).
"When I walked into the room and we started to play,” Recalls Ari, “immediately the like minded musical approach opened doors to an incredible session that I will never forget.”
The trio spent a week in the studio, recording 25+ compositions by Ari, many written while following COVID quarantine protocols after safely traveling to VT from Seattle.
“Father Time” is the first from a batch of songs we’ve been mixing remotely with Ari and are excited to share, enjoy!

Welcome to the second installment of our “Microphone Monday” series, where we spotlight some of our favorite tools and techniques to capture sounds in the studio.
Last time we kicked off the series with the Royer SF24 Stereo Ribbon microphone and this week we turn to our tube microphone collection for a spotlight on the Chandler/EMI REDD.47 Microphone.
Continuing in the rich tradition of innovation at EMI, dating back to the early 1930s with Alan Blumlein, the father of ‘Stereo’, the company’s first coil microphones, velocity ‘ribbon’ mics and the “Blumlein pair” technique, Chandler Limited and Abbey Road Studios teamed up to create the first new EMI badged microphone in over a half century, the ‘REDD Microphone’. The resulting microphone is a large diaphragm tube condenser mic that features a vacuum tube based REDD.47 Mic Amplifier circuit directly coupled to a custom handmade premium platinum membrane capsule.
The REDD.47 aesthetically shares some design elements of classic “U-type” microphones, but by no means is it a recreation or a clone. This microphone represents a shift in traditional microphone design, fusing the concept of a large diaphragm condenser together with the well-regarded REDD.47 line amplifier, making it able to function without use of an external preamp. The proximity of the custom capsule to its internal preamp, creates the shortest possible path between the two most important elements in the recording chain, delivering a larger than life full-bodied sound, with a silky smooth top-end.
In addition to nine gain selections from +4db to +33db in “NORM” position, the extended “DRIVE” mode has an umbrella effect over the adjustable gain range, both structure as well as harmonic content, which allows it to be a versatile microphone in terms of tone and coloration.
Aside from the “DRIVE” mode, for extra color we often bring down the gain on the REDD so it sends a more traditional “mic” level signal, then amplify it with one of our ‘character’ preamps by API, NEVE, BAE, etc. And for that extra retro vibe, pairing it with vintage tube preamps by Gates, Altec or Ampex, brings you sonically right back to the 1960’s!
The Chandler REDD.47 consistently delivers smooth lows, detailed midrange and an airy top end.
Capturing high fidelity definition with incredible tone and color possibilities.
It continues to excel and exceed expectations on any source we throw at it, including piano, bass - both electric and upright, guitars - both acoustic and electric, and of course drums. However you’ll most often find it tucked in our vocal booth!

07/12/2021

Welcome to our “Microphone Monday” series, where we spotlight some of our favorite tools and techniques to capture sounds in the studio.
We kick things off with a microphone you’ll see in virtually every session we do - the Royer SF24 Stereo Ribbon microphone.
To say we are fans of ribbon mics here would be an understatement!
With a deep collection of modern and vintage classics by Bang & Olufsen, Beyerdynamic, Coles, Peluso, MBHO,RCA and Royer, the natural warmth and character of ribbons are applied many sources here in the studio.
Ribbons are described as “dark” in comparison to their brethren the condenser microphone.
However, we find when paired with a nice equalizer like a Pultec, API 550 or Neve 1073, a larger-than-life sound can be achieved that will hold up against the best condenser mics out there.
We’re also connoisseurs of stereo microphone techniques, whether a simple XY or DIN/ORTF to more complex arrays like Blumlein, Mid/Side and Decca Trees.
(If that previous sentence was greek to you, stay tuned for future posts about stereo techniques.)
So the Royer SF24 found a home in sessions quite quickly for us and has rarely been put away since!
A stereo microphone, using two offset figure 8 ribbon elements to create a “Blumlein” pattern, it also boasts active electronics.
The SF-24 contains two fully balanced, discrete head amplifier systems using specially wound toroidal transformers and ultra-low noise FET’s.
This delivers higher sensitivity, but lower noise, almost like a condenser microphone. It simpler terms, it lets you mate an SF-24 to any preamplifier without needing tons of gain and ensuring the tone being put out is even across different preamp choices.
Even with quiet sound sources, you’ll have enough level to capture any recording.
The active electronics also slightly increase the high frequency response, giving you a less “dark” ribbon sound.
The versatility of the Royer SF-24 is uncanny for creating “you-are-there” stereo recordings that capture not only the instrument(s) being recorded but, depending on how the microphone is positioned, varying degrees of the acoustical space.
And the phase compatibility between both sides of the SF-24 is excellent, allowing you to combine two channels in mono without creating any artifacts.
This allows us to capture all the beautiful acoustic reflections off our reclaimed barn board lined rooms, and/or the rich fundamental tone of the instrument(s) in the room, bringing space and warmth to every recording we make.
Here at Tank Recording you’ll most often find it used as our main stereo room mic, but also direct on sources like drums, upright bass, piano, acoustic guitar, strings, horns and vocal groups.
