Reports are coming out that Angel Hernandez's retirement came out from a meeting with top MLB officials. Officials were questioning Hernandez's ability to see and comprehend correctly. Angel got so worked up that he stormed out and slammed the door behind himself. It took Angel 10 minutes to realize he was in the closet...His announcement of retirement came soon after.

Non-emotional take—

1. This is a long term move. Short sighted, this sucks. Long term, this was probably necessary and probably best case scenario comp wise for a 30yr old WR
2. You have to think BBB has a plan beyond next years 2nd from Minn
3. If find it hard to believe that this wasn’t run past Josh to some extent.
4. At its worst, we eat the salary this season to not be tied to it going forward.

Emotional take—
1. This sucks, I loved watching 14 in a Bills Jersey and would have loved to have him win a SB, and retire, as a Bill.
2. Most of the “nightmare drama queen BS” that surrounds him is fueled by media way more than Diggs—that being said I will not miss the Bills Mafia 24/7 Twitter over reaction fest
3. This still sucks but being willing to eat that cap, and give two picks to go with him, tells me something. Idk what that something is. But it’s something.

So, Mahomes and Reid won another. Honestly, when the Bills lost to KC again I felt like i wanted them to dog walk everyone en-route to another SB. They didn't but they got the job done. And i can't help but sit here and be dejected about the fact that they won...AGAIN. But it's not just that they won. It's honestly the fact that their offense sputtered for an ENTIRE GAME until their possession in OT when they basically did WHATEVER THE HELL THEY WANTED en route to the game winning score. I hate that their offense inside 2 minutes just watched defenses trip over themselves and look inept. I just don't get it.

But that's not the point of this post.

No, on to business here. If you follow the HTS account, you know that our lead host, Easy D, likes to write these things when he see's stuff on SM that annoys him and replying to everyone saying it would take up too much time...so, what I like to do in these instances is hammer out my thoughts and if you want to read them...cool. If not, ok. Today's topic?

Yeah, we did. But no we most certainly would not. Lets take a look at a few things here.

When Mahomes was drafted, he sat for a season before walking into an offense run by an established offensive mastermind, the fastest WR in the league before anyone knew who he was, and probably the best TE to ever play the game. Mahomes was athletic, had arm talent for days, and had a team around him that helped him out. You have to understand that Kelce has 94 catchers for 1,163 yards and 9 TD's in his career IN GAMES WITHOUT MAHOMES. For comparison, this years NFL leader for TE Receiving yards was Kittle w/ 65 for 1020 and 6. It also helps to have the fastest man alive in the slot. We've seen what Hill can do with the ball in his hands. Having that guy who can turn a 3 yd slant into a 90 yard dash doesn't hurt to have to help a young QB...

Now lets look at the Bills depth chart in 2017...because lets be honest, if the Bills took Mahomes 10th overall in 2017, we were probably going to start him...

RB McCoy, Tolbert
WR Zay Jones, Jordan Matthews, Andre Holmes, Brandon Tate, and Kaelin Clay....(thats a whole lot of "WHO?!?!?!")
TE Charles Clay, Nick Oleary, Logan Thomas

Thats a HUGE difference in talent. Ok ok ok...i hear you "OK but What if Mahomes sat in Buff like he did in KC"

RB McCoy, Ivory, Jones
WR Jones, Benjamin, Kerley, Holmes, Streeter, McCloud,
TE Clay, Oleary, Thomas

Again...not even close to

Kareem Hunt, Hill, Watkins, Kelce, Robinson, Conley....you get the point.

And then you add in the Andy Reid factor. An offensive guru with 20 years of experience calling offenses and developing his system. Im sure that didn't hurt. Mahomes getting pick by Buffalo in 17 would have sentenced him to, at best, being Josh...and at worst...going the way of JP Lossman or Trent Edwards. Excitement and intrigue killed by injury and a subpar roster. If you look at what Josh had to do to put the Bills on his back, esp in the early years, I don't Mahomes is built like that. That's not a knock on Mahomes at all either. Josh is a damn moose. Most people didn't think he was built for it until he showed he was...and still is.

Now, lets flip the other side of the coin...what if Josh was on the Cheifs?

1st, lets not forget how raw Josh was year 1. Maybe he sits in 2018 while Alex Smith gets one more kick at the can in KC. Maybe he learns and fixes his throwing mechanics. Maybe not. Maybe he gets the nod in 2019 and THEN learns about his shortcomings. Maybe he doesn't look good enough in practice for KC/Reid to think he's the guy and never gets a chance. (keep in mind Josh was 3rd on our deoth chart behind McCarran and the Peterman...) But for SnG's, Lets say he does. Do I think the cheifs are good? Yeah. Do i think they're the powerhouse they've been? Probably not. At the least, they're a few years behind while Josh develops.

Whats my point?

We can play what if all we want. But if you ask me...Mahomes ended up in the best possible situation he could have. And Honestly, Josh may have too. I honestly don't think were having the Josh v Mahomes discussions in regards to a Peyton/Brady level if the roles were reversed because neither of them may have gotten the same shot.

It's rare that you pass on talent that ends up being Partrick Mahomes and you end up with what ends up being the next best thing. But sometimes these things happen exactly how they're supposed to....

Answering some questions and commenting on things i've seen and heard from the Bills game...

"They called a fake punt on their own 30, WTF?!? Fire McDermott"
--Thats where you call something like that if you're going to because thats where they're not expecting it. We had the numbers, and didn't execute. Also, they scored ZERO POINTS off it. So...in the end, it didn't matter either way. If it worked, hes a genius. And no, it was not specifically called for Hamlin as a "make a wish" play...dummies.

"But they gave the ball to HAMLIN"
--Yup, because thats who plays that spot on punts. If they suddenly had a WR or RB back there, it would tip the defense off and lessen the chances of it working. Fake punts are based in making the other team thing you're actually going to punt. (also, just because he plays D, doesn't mean he doesn't have some ball skills. Micah Hyde used to return kicks, remember?)

"Josh played hero ball on the last drive, he needs to take whats given and not force the ball!"
--He didn't play hero ball. On 2nd and 9 his primary read was Shakir, who was WIDE OPEN. Josh missed the throw bc Dawkins got dog walked back into his face and he couldn't finish the delivery. The next play broke down and he got flushed before he got through his progression to the open checkdowns. That was not hero ball Josh by any means. Just because you see them open on TV, doesn't mean the QB is even looking to that side of the field based on his primary reads and progression. Its not madden.

"McDermotts defense is trash"
--Rough game, our DL really struggled but its not like KC's OL is trash. They've got two current all pros and at least one other recent all pro. They beat our DL and playing LB 3/4 and 6 behind them last night with a banged up CB1(b), CB3, and aging safties who've been fighting injuries all year...we just didn't have enough to stop them as much as we liked. But when it mattered, we put the ball in our Offense's hands with a chance to win it. Not sure what more you can ask for from that patchwork Defense.

"Trade Diggs, Trade Von, Trade Josh (because he deserves better"
--Settle down. The 1st two are locked in here because of dead cap situations. And one of the cardinal rules of the NFL is you either have an elite QB, or your looking for one. When you have one....YOU DON'T TRADE HIM. I know you're emotional but god damn...

and, my favorite--
"FIRE MCDERMOTT AND BRING IN BELICHICK"
--This fan base...I STG. You literally have no idea what you want. You want McD to be more modern and aggressive. So he is, and you don't like it. Now, you think his defensive minded old school football ways don't work in 2023/24, he isn't offensive minded, and he just puts out coach speak to reporters without REALLY saying anything....and your answer is AN OLDER, OLDER SCHOOL DEFENSIVE MINDED HEAD COACH WHO MASTERED THE SAY NOTHING INTERVIEW 20 YEARS AGO?!?! Do you even watch the NFL? Seriously? At least i UNDERSTAND wanting the offensive minded HC over McD. But to want to bring in a dinosaur who's only success was directly tied to the best QB to ever do it EVER...I just don't understand. Brady left NE, and still won. Brady left NE..and they've been terrible. And you want that to come here? I can't with you people.

Oh, and bullying players on the team on social media is utter dogsh*t. As is throwing snowballs at players during plays, on the sidelines, and after games. Love him or hate him, Mahomes shouldn't be dodging rockets while trying to connect with a young cheifs fan. Be better.
