This is more than a post about an incident the Williamsville fire department had last evening. This is about neighbors showing up; about neighbors turning out to help neighbors.

A structure fire was dispatched at 9:15pm, with confirmation of an attic fire by WFD 9-2 on scene on Highland Drive. Seven individuals of special needs were evacuated by a staff member to the residence’s driveway. With the assistance of WFD, the residents were quickly evacuated from their own driveway to one across the street and out of visibility of their home.

The first knock on a neighbor’s door by WFD brought the warmth these people needed, with the homeowner responding without hesitation to the request for blankets for these displaced people out in the frigid cold. This neighbor was like an angel dropping warmth from the heavens upon them.

With the need to get them out of the cold, fire department personnel made the request of the neighboring restaurant on the corner, One-Eyed Cat Brewing, on their busy Saturday night, if they could offer respite to the evacuees from the house fire down the street. Without a question being asked, restaurant workers themselves came to assist with the relocation of these individuals off the street to the warmth of shelter the business was now offering. These staff members could not have been more accommodating in their sincere actions to assure respite for people in need.

In times when questions are raised about the world we live in, these acts are confirmation that there absolutely is much good in the world. As small as they were, they were not small at all.

The fire was quickly contained and extinguished, and WFD would like to thank all its mutual aid response.
