I had to miss the tribute concert for Les Ming but I did want to share some thoughts about Les. I don't exactly remember the year but it was in the mid to late 80's when he came to the studio (Crystal Studios) with his band. I can't remember if that first band was The Skreem or not but it was aggressive metal with a creative flair. I guess that's the best way I could discribe it. Metal with a commercial flair that would make you like the songs even if you were not a metal fan. The band was fast and tight.
Fast forward several years and Les calls me and says he wants to make a Christian album and I thought it was going to be a metal christian album. It was a decent assumption because I've never heard him play anything else. To my surprise, Les was a way more rounded player than I ever thought. This new batch of songs were not metal at all and were very pop-ish. It was a great project with some amazing songs. It was a chance to see a side of Les that I had never known.
Several years after that I asked Les if he would help bring another project that I was working on to life. It was a project for a client of mine (not metal) and most of the songs were good but they lacked something. So I thought I would ask Les if he could put in the something that was missing. And wow, Les' impact on those songs was amazing. Every song on that project that he played on improved 120 percent. The songs were so much better that you couldn't go back to the way they were before.
So I'm sharing these stories in an effort to honor a friend. He may have been known as a metal god but he was way more than that. His guitar skills went way beyond just metal.
Les was just an awesome guy. He was a great friend, he loved his family, and was a Christian. The studio has opened lots of opportunities over the years and one of those was the opportunity to meet Les Ming. Thank you, Lord, for letting me become friends with such a great person.
