“Gandoca”, the new work by composer @susancamposfonseca, and part of our IGM+LAB initiative, is OUT today.
[Gandoca], for solo tuba and analog white noise machine, was developed during research-creation residencies at Costa Rica’s Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge between 2022 and 2024. The piece reflects on extinction, humanity, and justice through listening. Commissioned by Costa Rican tubist @diegojimenezcamacho for his Master’s thesis, the EP includes two versions of the work, both performed and recorded by Jiménez-Camacho.

Praised as a “mesmerizing mezzo-soprano with a fiery theatrical presence and dynamic vocalism” by Opera News and described as “meteoric” by @icareifyoulisten, @briana_sings_things album draws from the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of the African diaspora, inviting listeners on a journey through the singer’s self-discovery through the lens of culture and lineage.
Commissioned by Kaufman Music Center and Hunter, “Dispersed and Transcendental Chants, Op. 18” premiered in December 06, 2022 at Merkin Concert Hall. Composed by Colombian composer and visual artist @juliandelachica, the music artfully blends African-American heritage with contemporary sounds, featuring texts and poetry by Hunter, @raekdevine and De La Chica. Both the premiere performance and the recording were led by pianist @ericsedgwick.
To celebrate the anniversary of the release, IGM is sharing a new video of Hunter during the recording of Chant 1: Lwa and Chant 6: Confession, the latter featuring poetry written by Hunter herself. Additionally, we are releasing the album notes written by Steve Smith and revisiting select videos that form part of the album’s narrative.
Hunter is currently performing in the production of Il Trovatore at the @metopera in New York, with performances scheduled for November 14, 17, 22, 26, and 30, as well as December 3 and 6.

Composed by Julián De La Chica, this cycle was inspired by his visit to Évora, in southern Portugal, during the summer of 2023. In a chapel known as the Chapel of Bones, built with human remains, these verses were found inscribed on one of its pillars. At the entrance, a sign reads: “Nos ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos,” which translates to, “We bones that are here, await yours.” This inscription serves as a poignant reminder of mortality and the fleeting nature of life. Deeply moved by these verses, De La Chica decided to set them to music.
This single is part of Armas’s upcoming solo debut album, releasing on November 1st (Day of Dead) under the Brooklyn label [IGM], and recorded alongside her husband, the virtuoso Cuban pianist Ahmed Alom. The album will feature the premiere recordings of two song cycles composed by De La Chica: Arias Florentinas, Op. 15, and Canciones de la Muerte, Op. 20, which was composed and dedicated to Armas.

III. El Arno
La luz que florece, espesa,
de las aguas del río Arno,
altiva y celosa, me llama.
Mujer, sola y triste,
que divagas en los ríos.
Yo soy tuyo.
Adiós, adiós mi amor. Adiós mi amor.
Venid a mi encuentro, en el Arno.
III. The Arno
The light that blooms, thick,
from the waters of the Arno River,
haughty and jealous, it calls me.
Woman, alone and sad,
who wanders in the rivers.
I am yours.
Farewell, farewell my love.
Farewell my love.
Come meet me on the Arno.

#IGMcollaborator, Cuban pianist @ahmedalomm is well—known not only for his fresh, imaginative interpretations and virtuosic command of the canonical repertoire but also as an exceptional improviser and innovator in contemporary music.
Watch this rare clip of Alom during a solo performance at @dromnyc, NY, last May, during @pedritomartinezmusic concert. Alom transitions from Bach's Goldberg Variations to a captivating rendition of @philipglass's Etude No. 6, creating variations that seamlessly lead into Mozart and then to his Latin roots from Cuba. In recent months, Alom has been in conversations and rehearsals with composer @juliandelachica to explore different options for reimagining the Glass Etudes from a wholly different and exploratory perspective in a new project curated by @irreverencegroupmusic. More exciting details will follow soon.

Rising Mexican mezzo-soprano @rosarioarmas is well-known for the power of her voice, whether she is performing opera, art songs, rancheras, or boleros. On November 1st [Día de los Muertos] IGM will release her debut studio album featuring the premiere recordings of two song cycles by minimalist composer @juliandelachica: Arias Florentinas, Op. 15 (2021) and Canciones de la Muerte, Op. 20 (2024), the latter dedicated expressly to Armas.
This commission, the cycle Op. 20, is based on texts by Fr. António da Ascenção and was composed after De La Chica visited Évora, in southern Portugal, during the summer of 2023. There, in a chapel known as the Chapel of Bones, built with human remains, these verses were found inscribed on one of its pillars. De La Chica, deeply moved by the story, decided to transform these verses into songs.
Here is a brief excerpt from the first song, “El Peregrino,” featuring Rosario Armas and her husband, Cuban virtuoso @ahmedalomm during the recording session:
“Aonde vais, caminhante, acelerado?
Pára...não prossigas mais avante;
Negócio, não tens mais importante,
Do que este, à tua vista apresentado.
(English)
“Where are you going in such a hurry, traveler?
Pause...do not advance your travel.
You have no greater concern than this one:
That which is now before your eyes.”
