Keenan Jones is the author of "Saturday Morning at the 'Shop," a children’s book. The Plymouth author wrote the book based on his experiences at barbershops and their joyful connection in the Black community. Jones says he wanted to fill a gap in larger discussions about boys, Black culture and hair.

Minnesota House DFL and Republican Party members are in a pre-legislative session stare down as both parties try to hash out a power-sharing agreement. Republicans currently hold a 67-66 edge. However, a special election scheduled for Jan. 28 is expected to lean DFL, and House Democrat leaders say they may not report when the session convenes if compromises aren’t made.

New City of Robbinsdale, MN - Government Mayor Brad Sutton received the oath of office Tuesday night replacing longtime mayor and council member Bill Blonigan, who stepped away from elected office after serving the city for 44 years. Another new Robbinsdale City Council member, Raymond Blackledge, was also sworn in. Jason Greenberg, who was re-elected last fall to his first full four-year term, also received the oath of office.

The restaurant at Edinburgh USA Golf Course in the City of Brooklyn Park, MN - Local Government will soon have a new operator, a new menu and a new name. The new restaurant will be called Tavern at Edinburgh and is expected to open by March 1. It replaces The Brooklyn. The new operator has experience running golf course restaurants.

The new restaurant replaces the previous clubhouse restaurant The Brooklyn. The city is also taking over rental services.

The new year offers new restaurants and dining options in both Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center. Arepas On The Go, an authentic Venezuelan restaurant, recently opened in a Brooklyn Park strip mall. A new Mexican restaurant, Reyes Restaurant Bar & Breakfast, also opened recently near the intersection of Brooklyn Boulevard and West Broadway.

Council members elected last fall are getting sworn in this week. In City of Brooklyn Park, MN - Local Government, new council members Amanda Cheng Xiong and Shelle Page, as well as returning member Tony McGarvey were sworn in Monday night. In City of Maple Grove, MN - Local Government, new council member Jon McCullough took his oath of office while Mike Ostaffe, who could not attend Monday’s meeting, will be sworn in at a future meeting.

The Robbinsdale Area School Board elected Greta Evans-Becker as chair this week. Evans-Becker had served as chair in 2023 but was ousted from that role by her fellow board members. School district voters re-elected Evans-Becker to the board this fall.

Brooklyn Park Community Development Director Tim Gladhill said there are 700 undeveloped acres in the northwest area of the city. That area will eventually include a Blue Line Extension light rail stop. Gladhill says adding med-tech businesses and manufacturing companies to the region would add significant value to the community.

Brooklyn park has big-picture plans for undeveloped space near highways 169 and 610. The city is welcoming public feedback for that area.

Cooper High School Principal Shaunece Smith says a student brought a small ax and a stun gun into the school in a backpack, according to an alert sent to families. District officials were tipped off about the weapons through the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System.

A Brooklyn Park man received a 25-year prison sentence for fatally shooting a man at a family gathering celebrating the birth of a child. According to the criminal complaint, the victim was standing just a foot away from a 2-year-old child when he was shot multiple times. Lue Chang said he shot the victim because he “disrespected” him, the complaint said.

The first homicide victim this year in Minneapolis has been identified as a Brooklyn Center man. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office says 21-year-old Bobby Hawkins died Friday night of multiple gunshot wounds. The investigation into the shooting continued Monday.

The State Patrol spent about a year working on a pilot program for a new drug detection tool for impaired drivers. Law enforcement officials say the oral roadside test has achieved positive results to detect ma*****na, which has been legalized and will soon be sold in stores in Minnesota. It will be up to the Minnesota Legislature to decide if the test results can be used in the courtroom.

A new drug detection tool may be deployed on Minnesota roadways this year. It functions similar to a Breathalyzer.

CCX Media is a nonprofit community media organization that has served Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Crystal, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, New Hope, Osseo, Plymouth and Robbinsdale for almost 40 years. We produce a daily newscast. We operate a production truck to broadcast or stream live sporting events, parades, and concerts. We operate multi-media studios and provide hands-on training for volunteers to make their own videos. We partner with our member cities to cover city meetings and produce informational segments.
