January is Train Your Dog Month, and we are continuing our training tips series from Mary Green, CPDT-KA.

Training Tip: Consistency

Have you ever noticed how much your dog likes routine? If it’s getting close to dinner time and you’re not getting ready to feed them, they will let you know! And they can’t even read a clock! Routine and consistency help your dog to understand your expectations.

Be consistent when training your dog. For example, if you do not allow your dog on furniture, be consistent. If you allow them on it sometimes but not others, it’s confusing for the dog. Or if you allow them to jump up on you when you get home some days and other days you don’t, your dog will not know what you expect.

Consistency is key for a well-mannered dog!

Did you know?

Dogs can learn over 1,000 words! Studies have shown that some dogs, like border collies, have the cognitive ability of a 2– or 3-year-old child and can understand an incredible number of words and commands. For example, a famous border collie named Chaser learned the names of over 1,000 objects and could retrieve them on command! While they may not be able to speak actual words, we’d say that makes them pretty great communicators!

January is Train Your Dog Month!
Every week in the month of January, we are sharing a training tip from Mary Green, CPDT-KA.

Training Tip: Start Simple.
Think of training your dog the same way you learn—start simple, then gradually increase the difficulty. For example, if you want to learn to play the piano, you start with “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”—not Beethoven’s 5th. The same principle is true for teaching your dog new things—start simple!

January is Train Your Dog Month🐾🐶

Start the year off right with a well-behaved and happy pup! All month long we will be sharing training tips to help strengthen the bond between you and your furry friend. Today’s tip comes from Mary Green, CPDT-KA.

How can you make training your dog fun and positive? Easy! Reward the behaviors that you like. For example, if your dog is settling nicely, reward it! The science behind R+ (positive reinforcement) is that of adding something that increases the likelihood of that behavior increasing in the future. Reinforcement, by definition, makes something stronger. When we reward a desirable behavior, our pets figure this out. They begin to offer behaviors that we have been rewarding. Stay tuned for more tips from our expert!

Kick Off the New Year with Safe Winter Walks!

January is the perfect time to embrace those crisp, wintery strolls with your pup! But cold weather brings unique challenges for our furry friends. Check out these quick tips to keep your dog cozy, safe, and happy while exploring the great outdoors this winter. 🐶❄️

1. Bundle Up: Short-haired or small dogs may need a coat to stay warm. Protect paws with booties or paw balm to guard against ice and salt.
2. Adjust Walk Lengths: Keep walks shorter in freezing temps and watch for signs of discomfort like shivering or paw lifting.
3. Stay Visible: Winter days are short—use reflective gear or a light-up collar to keep your dog safe in low light.
4. Wipe Paws: De-icing salts and snow can irritate your dog’s paws. Wipe them down after every walk to remove any harmful substances.

Enjoy those frosty adventures together! 🐾

3 Essential New Year’s Eve Safety Tips for Pet Owners

1) Keep pets away from fireworks. The loud noises and bright lights can frighten pets, leading to stress or attempts to escape. Create a safe, quiet space indoors for them to relax, and never let pets near lit fireworks.

2) Watch out for party hazards. Ensure pets can’t access alcohol, chocolate, or other toxic foods. Keep party decorations like balloons and streamers out of reach to avoid choking or ingestion risks.

3) Secure your pet’s ID tag. In case your pet gets spooked and runs away, make sure their collar has up-to-date ID tags. A microchip adds extra security for a happy reunion.

These quick tips can help keep your pets safe as everyone rings in the New Year!
