Black Box 2.0

After nearly 2 decades of making music on 48th and Peoria, Black Box is moving. What a fantastic ride it has been! I would LOVE to mention EVERYONE’s name here, but it would take too long! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing this place to serve as your creative playroom. I’m honored and privileged to have shared all the special moments with y’all.

I will be building the new Black Box in my new home. This dream has been percolating in my heart for years and I’m beyond excited to be able to work from the comfort of my own home. Special thank you to my incredible wife who went out of her way to accommodate my studio space in our home. You’re the BEST.

Since the whole world is at a standstill and everyone is isolated from each other, I believe this could be an “opportunity” for all musicians to reload creatively. That could mean sitting down to work on your craft/a new setlist or writing new songs. We had to postpone all our sessions as a precaution starting today, and while it hurts financially, I believe it’s the right thing to do.

With that said, I can’t wait to work on all the new songs that come out of this extraordinary circumstance once it’s safe to hug each other again.

Stay safe. Stay positive. Stay creative!

I’m hearing that a lot of my musician friends are hurting financially due to canceled gigs and concerts. I feel that as a music community, we need to look out for each other. If you’re directly affected by this situation, I’d like to offer free mastering or a significant discount for your project during this challenging time. Obviously, I have to limit this to those who are losing gigs because of the coronavirus concerns, but I want to do my part to provide some relief. Hang in there, friends!

Here's a couple of free plugins you can download. Ozone Element expires on Oct 2. If you don't have a decent dynamic EQ plugin, Nova can be a helpful tool to shape/carve out sound better than static EQ when you have problematic frequencies.

A singer friend of mine said that he hears a pretty loud hiss as soon as he opens the project file. This is a common issue many people run into and the main culprit is the plugins that have an analog mode or saturation/noise k**b. The fix? Turn down/off “analog” or “noise” k**b/button.

With that said, some hiss/noise can give the track character or vibe that’s pleasing to the ear. You can automate the level of hiss so that you don’t hear it as much during the quiet part of the song and bring it up in bigger parts of the song.

If you’re mixing at a relatively quiet volume (which is a good habit), you may not notice the hiss until you put a compressor on the mix bus.

Just wanted to share in case this is helpful to some of you. Happy mixing!
