Happy Easter everyone. This song written by Mark “Brink” Brinkman and sung by Tiffany (Wheeler) Rowland has always been one of the releases by Mountain Roads Recordings that I am most proud of. There is also an excellent version out there by The Wilson Family. Thanks to Bob Marshall for putting this together. The song speaks for itself!

Thank you Dale, for this tribute to Donna Correll.

The Elk Creek community of Grayson County, Virginia, lost a good friend, neighbor, and old time musician on Saturday, January 19, 2019. Donna Kirk Correll, known by many from her 25 years playing upright bass and singing with the Wolfe Bros. String Band, passed away after a brave struggle with cancer. She’s survived by her husband Jerry, daughter Cori, two grand children, step children and grand kids, as well as her parents, Rex and Glenna Kirk, and brother Danny.

Donna leaves behind hundreds of musical friends she made at regional fiddlers’ conventions, festivals, and jam sessions. In addition to bass, she played dulcimer, and was a gifted folk singer. Her deep interest in history led her to find many of the older obscure songs that have been handed down here in the Virginia-Carolina Blue Ridge. Donna’s own original song. “Green Wood” (Wolfe Bros. 2001 Odyssey CD - CCR-0190), tells the story of the last hanging in Grayson County. Her great grandfather was the sheriff at that time, and he had to preside over this sad and historic event.

Donna was such a vital part of the Wolfe Bros. String Band and also the old time music community for the last quarter century here along the Crooked Road Music Trail. The Correll’s Grand Picnic, which was held every June (1993-2017) in conjunction with the Grayson County Fiddlers Convention, exemplified Donna’s out going personality so well. Many memories remain for so many people of these special celebrations as hundreds of musical friends would gather yearly from many states to play old time music and to share good food and fellowship. Donna and Jerry’s giving spirit always made the gatherings very memorable events. Donna’s smile as well as her talents will be missed by family, friends and fans alike.

Great festival, RexFest, coming up this weekend in Galax, VA. Any of you headed that way will be treated to some of the best talent from the area along with Rhonda Vincent to close out the day. Look for and welcome Jan Dale to this event. Jan is the radio host of Southern Style, a PBS radio show originating from Melbourne, Australia. She features music from our area prominently on her show and visits as many area venues as she can when travelling in the US. Gail and I are excited to spend the past week with her at our home in Bristol.

We lost a member of our Close Kin family last night. Mark Freeman crossed over last night. He was a member of Pathway who gave us our 5th release entitled, "Somewhere Tonight" and was a valuable asset for our original Close Kin, A Reunion of Bluegrass & Old Time Music which came out in 2012. Please remember Liz, Justin, Mark, Scott, the rest of his family and band in your prayers. He will be missed.
