Seneca Casino hosted its Veteran’s Powwow this past weekend. Parents helped their young children dancing in the Tiny Tots competition, while Woodlands dancers honored gold star families, followed by a 21-gun salute and a moment of silence. Also known as the Marvin “Joe” Curry Veterans Powwow, the annual contest is held in honor of Seneca Nation veterans, according to the nation's website. Curry was a member of the Snipe Clan, born on the Cattaraugus Territory. A member of Iroquois Post 1587, he began his military service in 1950 with two tours of duty during the Korean War and also served in the Vietnam War. During active duty in the U.S. Navy, he served on eight warships, including the USS Little Rock. Era photos by Wade Aiken

Fire and police departments were dispatched at 3:45 Monday afternoon to reports of a vehicle into a house on Route 16 in Knapp Creek, N.Y. Responding agencies included volunteer fire departments from Knapp Creek, Allegany, Town of Olean and Weston Mills, as well as the City of Olean. Star Hose Company of Port Allegany responded with its technical rescue squad. Other Pennsylvania fire departments responding included Derrick City and Otto Township volunteer fire departments, assisting with traffic control. The house had to be stabilized before the pickup truck could be removed by a wrecker. No further information was immediately available. New York State Police investigated.

This is a story that was almost snuffed out. It spans three centuries, several generations and multiple communities — and comes together as if it were patented.
It is a story that, Jack Gorton and Ron Orris knew, had to be told. The legacy of the innovative and entrepreneurial Blaisdell family so integral to Bradford’s development predates the world-renowned Zippo lighter. It started like — and with — a fire, and is brought to light in their new book, “Blaisdell Legacy,” ghostwritten by Taylor Tarahteeff and published by Barnes & Noble.

This is a story that was almost snuffed out. It spans three centuries, several generations and multiple communities — and comes together as if it were patented.
