Story time. In High School, all the years it was offered to me, I took a class called Harmony. The teacher's name was Richard Choura. Mr. Choura.

He was a bit of a nut, would say things like, "That's like jumping off a cliff in midstream," and not recognize the error, or go off on a twenty minute rant about new age music because he associated it with the occult and was, himself, a devout Christian.

He was also a musical mastermind. I will never forget the time we were going over modes and he brought out the sheet music for "The Star-Spangled Banner" and set it on the piano and played through the melody with accompaniment in every single mode from Ionian to Dorian all the way up to Locrian so that we could hear the difference, sight-reading and transposing it all in his head right there on the spot.

I mentioned how terrible I was at sight-reading once and he told me he learned to do it by taking a job as a church organist so he HAD to do it. Had to do it, had to learn. Said he learned on Sundays in front of a choir who NEEDED him to get it right. I can believe it; he was like this. Impulsive and mad about music.

Claimed to teach a college-level theory class, which I don't know if that's true or not, I have not been to college, but easily more than half of what I know and understand about how music works and comes together and does it's job is from that man. He knew it, he could demonstrate it, he could teach it.

Being an impulsive nut, however, sometimes his ideas got away from him. When we were going over 4-part harmony we were tasked with writing a 32-bar melody and harmonizing it for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass instruments, and he promised us he could get the school band to set aside a day to actually play our music.

I did the assignment, I think most of us did, but it never happened, the concert. It was probably never going to happen but I was sure excited to believe it was going to, and I had a lot of fun writing the thing. Can't remember all of the rules; parallel thirds are okay... parallel 4ths and 5ths, not so much..?

Anyways maybe five or six years later, I had a modest home studio and got to thinking about the melody, and I wanted to hear it, so I recorded it. I am sure that I am not following the rules of harmony in the arrangement with this version but it is the exact melody (the breakdown with the vibes was added to give it some dynamics and a little more length), with simulated faux orchestra.

Didn't start out as a Christmas or snow-themed thing, but once the sleigh bells wound up in the percussion track, the rest of the arrangement kinda dictated itself. Sleigh bells'll do that.

So, for your horse-drawn carriage whipping through the snowy trails on the way to Grandmother's house pleasure—perfect for a night like tonight—I present to you "Winter Road". Probably took longer to read that than it'll take to play it...

On the topic of muh playlists/mixtapes...
I like mixtape, the kids say playlist.
Few truly understand the art of it.

The premium arrangements of mine are on my Mixcloud page. For now, with the free account, I can display ten shows (I've made and uploaded twenty). Also they don't play at the highest quality unless I pay.

But these situations are quite something, as I have crossfaded and tailored every transition, like the pros do on the radio, so there's no dead space. It's something I can't do with Spotify—well I think they have a crossfade deal but it's automated.

Leaving the currently displayed collection here.
May choose to feature individual shows in the future.
Try one out one day while you're dishin.

I recommend "Silk".

Why I named it that; the transitions are smooth as silk.

Whew, I gotta do this, because I told myself I was gonna do it, before getting back to the other things I need to do, which is tell you what I'm doing...

First of all I'm going to be sharing more Kade Puckett/Hairlobe Bones, don't you worry. The thing to understand is I used to have a lot of that music and it was some of my favorite music, and then the PC I had them downloaded (fairly from Garageband dot com and MySpace, back in the day, I do not steal music) to bit the dust, and the CDs I had them burnt to I loaned out and never got back.

So for years and years I thought the tracks were lost to me and I could only think back fondly on them, and then all-of-a-sudden there they were again. Plus more. A lot more I never even heard. So... I'm in this process of reacquainting myself and trying to catch up. Simply amazing stuff. The range of skill and song-craft and not to mention personality blows my mind consistently.

The first top priority is finishing up the words for the new album, though. I had a plan and I have good reason to stick to it, which was (is) to lock down the drums (done), and the bass (done), and the lyrics (halfway done) so when I got to overdubs I could just play and create and make flesh and costumes without having to worry about the skeleton. If that makes sense.

This is what's on the top of my mind and what I'm going to jump on as soon as I finish this letter. On the one hand I like that it's taking a bit of time... it's giving me more to observe and potentially write about. On the other hand I kinda want to blast through the rest of em because I really want to play. Listening to Mr. Puckett again did that. I even almost abandoned the plan!

One other fun thing I've put on my plate is a mondo 70s Spotify playlist to go with my 80s and 90s ones. Honestly—if I haven't already mentioned this—my absolute favorite thing of all time to do is arrange groups of songs in orders. Even less money-making potential there than in making actual music (which is saying something) but I just love it. It'll be tricky, since the reason I've avoided doing a 70s one is most of my favorite artists and songs are from that era and I wanted to make sure I had em for other playlists (I repeat no tracks from playlist to playlist; every one fresh, that's a Groovecifer guarantee) and I've kinda used a lot, so I'm really going to have to think about it.

These two things are the two big things I'm starting off 2024 with.

As it strikes me I'd also like to start sharing some of my old recordings, possibly with stories of why they are and how they came to be. Something I've never done. There's also the band, Mojo Prophet, I play keys in and whatever's up with that situation, I'll keep you posted on. I believe an EP is close to mixed?

But, yeah.
Okay.
There it is.

Hello 2024, let's go...

I've one more thing to do before diving headfirst back into the record and that is go through my wardrobe and decide what's keep, for vets, and toss, to make room for new Christmas stuff and also because I haven't done it in ten years and it makes sense since I just redid this whole room.

I knew it was coming.

Have I ever told you how much I love this track?

We'll get back to the esteemed Mr. Puckett, don't you worry. This format is kinda growing on me, making a personal post and spinning a record. I didn't know what I was going to do with this space I do most of my damage on X. But this is kinda sorta like the "wholesome" space. I've cursed a little but I'm not causing any trouble with this account and let's say trouble will not be tolerated here... just music and movies stuff... f**k with me all you want at twitter.com/groovecifer

Once I thought I was on track to have all of muh words done for the new record by January. Christmas slows things down. That's okay. Time for peace, time for quiet, time to reflect, time to be with family, whatever family means to you.

Gonna maybe move that deadline back a month. You can do that when you're the writer, artist, producer, and record label.

So yeah I'll report back on progress with [untitled] as the new year gets underway... for now...

I did the thing, rearranged the studio.
A lot more space and it feels like a space to create within
better.

And I'm feeling like getting back to the original plan of continuing on with the lyrics, to the end, I am. It's a good plan. Clearing the room cleared my head and helped me to see.

Still skipping the fourth for now, I'll know what to holler about when it's time to record it I'm sure. So one more set of verses and chorus and that's all of side A.

There's still some sense of the wheel spinning away from its center because I had a concept of what the first three would be from the beginning of editing the bass, but by this point I'm—not *out* of ideas—it's just more amorphous, now, starting now and heading into side B.

lol yikes now I actually have to make stuff.

Anyway that's where we're at and since you know Groovecifer updates these days come with a fresh jaw-dropping Kade Puckett masterpiece each, you can go ahead and take yourself a few minutes on the groove train.

The wheel is spinning away from its center sooner than planned.
My intention was to finish all of the lyrics
before commencing any more music.

With three songs already ready for the next steps, I'm feeling compelled to track some instruments and vocals for those as I continue to word the remaining seven (or five; jury's kinda out on whether the two trance tracks will contain any vocals).

Unfortunately my setup is too modular. As you can see from the famous "Have a Cigar" video, I have to pull out what I want to use, set it up, record, put it away, pull out something else...

This will not do.
So I must to rearrange, which I don't want to do
first.

I'd better start wanting to do it!

Three songs lyrics done, seven to go, huzzah!

Now, the next one—without spoiling too much—is one of two attempts at a sort of psytrancey kind of thing, or my interpretation of it... I make excuses. The fact is I listen to a lot of it but I've never tried to make it and I'm sure I don't have the gear.

But it's happening anyway... in my mind, and in my mind, the next one, track four, has one of those breakdowns like they do, where some angry techno-pagan is ranting about the establishment or DMT or whatever and it sounds like they're yelling at you inside an airport hanger then just when they're totally losing their s**t the beat kicks back in... does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Well that's what's going on, I'm just going to find something more oddball to yell about. I've an idea. What I'm trying to say is the next one isn't lyrics per say, I just got to get a little weird and make sure the timing lines up right.

Now fart these blues.
I forgot how much I loved this track.
You know me, I tend to just keep tabs

on the funky stuff

but this is so good:
