A franchise typically comes with a well-known name, which gives each location a solid start for marketing.
But a brand is more than a name, and access to brand-building resources empowers each franchise to grow and prosper. Consider these DO’s and DON’Ts for your branding strategy:
DO offer the branding basics. One definition of branding is aligning what you want people to think about your company with what they actually think. Build consistency around core brand elements, so every franchise can meet customer expectations.
DON’T underestimate consistency!
DO support a strong brand position. Consider how you want your customers to perceive your brand. Will they recognize your brand at the local level? Provide each franchise with the elements that drive brand recognition, including service guidelines, style guides, and messaging templates.
DON’T neglect your brand guidelines.
DO automate repetitive design work. Signs, images, social media posts, and digital ads all play a part in branding. Automating these tasks locks in your brand “look” on every front.
DON’T forget to allow for local message customization.
DON’T let your branding be a burden. Marketing is a delicate balance between your company and each franchise. While each location must maintain brand consistency, incorporating local franchise participation will make your corporate brand more visible and connected on a local level.
Your corporate brand should support and connect with local franchise branding. Use your company’s learning management system (LMS) or learning experience platform (LXP) to give franchisees access to core brand elements and training resources.

Running a franchise means keeping a lot of balls in the air, and marketing might seem like a juggling act all its own. How can your franchise company empower each location to make the most of local marketing opportunities?
Provide local market research. Knowing the market enables your company — and its franchisees — to identify the needs, wants, and preferred features of a target market. Conduct thorough market research and make data accessible throughout your franchise network.
Local community involvement. Encourage each location to become active members in their local communities. Allow them to represent your company in community events, including parades, charity drives, and holiday celebrations. Recognize their involvement in your internal and external corporate messaging for positive exposure — for the franchise and your overall brand.
Provide customizable marketing materials. Regardless of the type of advertising you use, getting the right messaging to the right audience is crucial for driving brand awareness and sales. Make your corporate messaging materials both consistent and customizable to local franchise needs.
Offer ongoing training and support. Provide franchisees with access to marketing resources and training. Offer social media, design, and digital initiative guidance to support local marketing campaigns.
Local marketing builds your brand in every community where you establish a presence.
