Mother Nature will bring her own form of fireworks to the region this 4th of July holiday as periods of showers and storms move through the region. For this afternoon and tonight, the potential for stronger storms and locally heavy rain will be focused in south central South Dakota, though scattered storms are possible farther north and east. July 4th will see the chance for showers and storms expand east, with stronger storms and locally heavy rain focused during the afternoon and early evening, especially near and north of I-90. Given recent heavy rainfall and flooded rivers, the additional rain Thursday into Thursday evening may produce ponding water and slight rises on area rivers, so those living or camping along rivers will want to remain extra vigilant.
