Tune in for a special edition of Opera Box on Monday, February 10th from 7-8.

“The First Famous African American Singers” with Ron Nadel

Marian Anderson became the first famous opera star in America when she broke the color barrier in 1939. But she did not come out of nowhere. Early African American singers from the 19th and early 20th-century had begun to make inroads. Although denied access to America’s famous opera stages, they nonetheless gained fame in recitals (to segregated audiences), and even in early privately funded recordings of classical music and opera. They paved the way to greater acceptance for the first generation African American opera stars to come, in the 20th-century. Many were the children of slaves. Singers like Sissieretta Jones, Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, Roland Hayes, Antoinette Garnes, Paul Robeson, Ruby Elzy, Camilla Williams, and Anne Brown.

Thousands upon thousands flocked to state capitols, courthouses, and city halls across the country yesterday, following calls to peacefully stand up for American democracy. Calls to action via social media came from what seemed like all directions – organizers, local students, a new organization you heard from yesterday called American Opposition, spearheaded by Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos.
