One of my favorite rocking chairs l've made is this quilted red oak Tight Back rocker, upholstered with a super soft green wool. The figure in the wood gives it so much character. I made this to keep in my shop as a floor model but not long after it was finished someone came in and had to have it!

“After selling our house in 2019, Tommy and I went down to North Carolina to visit Tommy’s brother and sister-in-law on their farm. On our visit, while helping his brother cut and log some trees from a swampy area of the farm, Tommy fell in love with some beautiful boards from an old oak tree. Its figure was dramatically enhanced by this dark striping, almost like ambrosia. It became his inspiration to pick up his tools again after a bit of a hiatus. He cut and stickered several of the wide boards to rough for headboards. For more than a year he told me “I’m going to make us a bed out of that”. I honestly couldn’t see the beauty in the rough boards as he did, but seeing him inspired once again by a new material truly inspired me. I knew whatever he made would be beautiful.

Once he was set up in the new shop, Tommy started to shuffle around the rough wood to choose our headboard. A few days in, he called me with an idea: he explained that one of the boards had these openings where there were branches before and he thought maybe I could fill some of the openings with rocks. I was over the moon! I’d been collecting “rocks”(crystals, gems and minerals) for over twenty years and had never considered this possibility. Once he finished preparing the board, I went to the shop and took some measurements of the openings. Then I began my hunt for the perfect rocks - size, shape, properties and so on. It took the better part of a month to curate the initial rocks and gems for our headboard but once it was done, it was perfect. The system I chose for setting the stones has allowed me to change out the rocks that no longer serve our needs and replace them with new one. It continues to bring me so much joy.” - Rachel MacDonald

This Live Edge Swamp Oak bed features a variety of healing crystals including a white Moroccan Sugar Quartz cluster at the headboards center. Also featured in this piece is an Amethyst cluster, Veracruz Amethyst, Imperial Topaz cluster, Smoky Citrine, Himalayan Quartz crystal, Rough Ruby crystal, Apatite Crystal and terminated Blue Tourmaline.

Here's my method for labeling and sequencing boards during the rough milling and final milling stages to achieve a uniform set of parts for a studio stool, while preventing confusion and misidentification.
