It is my pleasure to announce the new Executive Board for the Boston University's Society of Professional Journalists for the 2018-2019 academic year.
Congratulations to:
Ariana Quihuiz, President
Jenny Jasmin Rollins, Vice President
Jenni Todd, Secretary
Noelle Fallacara, Treasurer
Our current E-Board was very impressed by their applications and are confident in their ability to grow SPJ to its full potential. We wish them the best of luck!
I have been president of SPJ since the spring semester of my freshman year. After being handed a club by a few seniors who had senioritis, I had no idea what to do with it, especially what to do with it all by myself. With the help of a few professors, I pulled together our "Fake News" event last April. To say it was exhausting was an understatement, but I learned I needed a great team if BU SPJ was to succeed at all.
I got the best team anyone could ask for. Ariana, the busy but fearless leader with humor and ideas that had no end. Alice Ferré, our DC-dwelling secretary who diligently booked a room after room and kept us all on track, (not to mention dealing with OrgSync and SAO.) And last but not least, Sarah Wells, our resident grad student who ran our social media and always challenged us with new and exciting ideas. I am lucky to have worked with them, to know them, and to call them my friends.
Together, we have held six events over the course of two semesters. We collaborated with the SPJ New England Professional Chapter (thank you to Jordan Frias,) as well as Northeastern SPJ, (whom we helped start their club.) We served countless pizzas, had impactful guest speakers and held fun competitions. We have over 330 members on our mailing list and are three likes short of 400 likes on Facebook. We gained 80 new members at Splash! and had a pretty regular attendance at our events.
These past three semesters serving as BU SPJ President have shaped my college experience. I have made invaluable connections (and friendships,) learned so many things, and had a LOT of fun. I couldn't imagine my BU experience without SPJ. I will always love this club and organization and am indebted to it for all it's done for me.
Now, as I say goodbye, I couldn't be leaving it in better hands. They are sure to grow and mold this club in ways I can't imagine, and I am so proud.
And to you, our members, we thank you for your continued interest and dedication to our club. We would be nothing without you! I hope your time with BU SPJ has been impactful in your college experience and I hope it will continue to be so. Stay in touch! Follow me on Twitter, or shoot me an email at [email protected]. I'd always be happy to help you in any way.
So, thank you SPJ. I can't thank you enough. On to the next adventure.
For the last time,
Sophie Will
BU SPJ President 2017-2018
